I had time to reflect on this one while sitting in traffic jam on the weekend on the way back from the Sunny Coast . We see all those adverts on TV when they highlight the Lane Collision Avoidance systems , the answer is why do car makers fit those silly convex mirrors which give a huge discrepancy on where a car is in relation to your own .
My older 2005 T5 has more normal style mirrors on both sides with a small section on the outer drivers side which is convexed and the passengers side has a small section along the bottom . The new T5.1 has full convexed on both sides with a small section of the driver side even more convexed , I find time and time again that when a car in an adjoining lane was apparently a long way back it was in fact it was right at the back corner and if you changed lanes with out physically looking a collision was inevitable . I wonder if they returned to the flat ones we would not need lane Collision Avoidance Sytems . I feel sorry for those with Transporters with no side glass it would be like driving blind and probably is a good reason for the avoidance system to be fitted STANDARD to those models .
I have to agree with that, but then if you think about the cost of the cars in the last 20 years, ....we pay the same or less for them, so they have to make money on something.
