hi all, is there a common thought on what is the best oil for a 2.5/128/t5? when i bought the car it came with a half used container of castrol SLX longlife 2(OW-30) which seems to be made for vw/audi petrol and diesel engines! should i continue to use this type?

Yes.

Vehicles made by VAG (which include Audi, Skoda, Seat and Volkswagen) all need to use lubricants approved to a specific VW standard.

Previously, there were many VW standards which made it confusing for the motorist, so in 2004 they consolidated all the previous standards into one: 504.00/507.00.

Unfortunately, certain R5 TDI and V10 TDI engines can't use the new standard, so they are still required to use one of the older standards: 503.00/503.01/506.01. This applies if your Transporter has any of following engine codes: AXD, AXE or BLJ.



Since the introduction of 504.00/507.00, many lubricant manufacturers have not renewed their approvals for 503.00/503.01/506.01, drastically reducing choice. So to the best of my knowledge, this is what's left on the Australian market (not that there was much to begin with):

Castrol Edge Longlife II 0W-30
Castrol SLX Professional Longtec Longlife II 0W-30
Fuchs Titan Supersyn Longlife Plus 0W-30
Liqui Moly Synthoil Longtime Plus 0W-30
Motul Specific 506 01 506 00 503 00 0W-30

They are not commonly found on retail shelves, so you will need to make enquires to their sales department before you go out to purchase it.

You will also probably be better off buying in bulk (20 l) due to the price and the sump capacity (7.4 l without oil filter).

You can buy it from the parts department at a dealer and on the whole I have found it no more expensive than anywhere else.

thanks guys for the reply, figured it was going to be this way. pity i can't use the same oil as my navara d40 diesel.

Up to 2006 VW506.01 (LongLife2)
From 2006 engines with DPF use VW507.00 (LongLife3), that's approx. from mid 2006

Going through the dealership, as mentioned, isn't really any different in price. Last I checked, LLII and LLIII ranged anywhere between $75 and $95 for a 5L bottle.

Best of all, it's nearly always on the shelf, and if it isn't, it can be had within a day or two.

For the 5 cylinder, you'll need nearly 8.5L. Most people buy two 5L bottles, and keep the leftovers for top-ups. Or consolidate the leftovers over time until they've got enough to do another service.

You need 7.4L for the oil and filter change. The LL2 oil is more expensive than LL3 at least in Adelaide.

The list price for LL2 in the VW parts catalogue is $123.26 (5 L), and you'll need to purchase two bottles, which is $246.52 for 10 L.

Or, you can order-in some Fuchs 0W-30 506.01 oil at your local Bursons for $100.16 (5 L), which is $200.32 for 10 L. Enquire if buying it in 20 L containers is cheaper.

Then you can use the $46.20 you saved to buy 2x oil filters ($19.09 ea.) and 2x sump plugs ($3.74 ea.).

Or you can ask a nice local mechanic on trade price with VW to order it in for you at a better buy price from them and be in under the $180 mark

Can someone confirm that Liqui Moly 5w-30 507/507 Top Tec 4200 is ok to use in a 2006 T5 2.5TDI with DPF? It comes in slightly cheaper than VW 507 00.

Also, do you guys change oil at 15k or sooner?
