Nudge Bar

Hi,
I'm thinking of making a nudge bar for my 2012 T5 under $100 for materials as against $600+ for a bought one.
Obviously I'd fabricate brackets and use the same reinforcing and attachment points as the bought ones soas it would be no stronger or weaker than a bought one.

But can't find out, what does Airbag compliant mean ?
I don't have parking sensors to worry about, are there airbag sensors ?

Airbag compliant means that the bar will allow the airbag sensors to trigger. Some that are attached to crush structures or the chassis may not transmit the correct deceleration which may result in deployment when it was not necessary, or not at all. Both are undesirable.

There are accelerometers that measure the rate of deceleration that then cause the airbags to deploy. There are similar sensors in the doors to detect side intrusion for curtain airbags.

On modern vehicles you will find it is illegal to fit non compliant and non approved front bars - if you are ever in a crash the inspection will reveal your home made bits and your insurance company will have a clause allowing them to void your cover for any claims leaving you with the possibility of being sued, take a lot of advice first before making your own.

You can occasionally pick up ex-ambulance or ex-Police nudge bars made by ETT at the wreckers. I have even seen the odd one pop up in Gumtree...

Reminds me of one of those native south American Indian young men who put lip plates into their bottom jaw to make their lip stand out as is their tradition .

Never looked at the nudge bars that way before...

I reckon they would do considerable panel damage if you ever "nudged" a vehicle. Vehicular blunt force trauma...

Well not every bar just that one , makes you wonder why do the Police need this type . Ah I know a battering ram for entering bad guys houses maybe ?

To push cars out of the way if they have broken down and need to be moved out of the way quickly.

Some used to have two padded vertical padded push bars, but these applied loads that were too concentrated. These nudge bars are more pliable and spread the force over more of the bumper.
