    Noisy Cabin Fan

    Hi Folks,

I have developed a noise in the cabin fan. At first I thought some leaves or something had got in (it was that sort of noise) since I've had to park it outside lately, but I've since had the chance to get a vacuum in there, and there's no sign of anything now, but the noise is not improved. Can be a bit variable, and often seems to take a few seconds after fan starts before the noise comes in. Quite noticable and annoying at low speed (and reflects the fan speed), but covered by road noise at highway speeds. More obvious on the passenger side.

Due for a service in about 1000Km. Because I've moved, I'll be going to a new dealer (Berwick, Vic), so I want to get some ideas before they just say replace the fan (at no doubt great expense).

    Any ideas,

    Brian.

You could remove the pollen filter on the underside below the glove box 6 screws you would be amazed at what gets trapped in there also the fan is easily removed to inspect again just a few screws holding it in place . I had to change mine last year as the brushes [ stupid little carbon ones probably worth $2 ] but you can only buy the whole thing as apart around $450 from memory .

Mine had a high pitched squeak, I took it out and put some oil on the bearings and has been good ever since, so far so good!

Update on my fan issue. The local auto-elec here (Mallacoota; a long way from VW specialists) pulled the fan, cleaned and lubricated (still had dust & crap from my 2008 Cape York trip; I thought dealer servicing might have fixed that in the last 6 years). That seemed to fix it at first, but now a (lesser) whistle has returned. The weird thing is it is only there when the fan is on AND I'm moving. It stops when the van stops, even though the fan is still running, and at stops if I turn the fan off while I'm still moving.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like something is stuck in the intakes , the air coming into the fan box from outside may cause the noise when you are moving as its forced into the van while moving . Check the grilled section below the windscreen that its sitting down properly , mine had lifted of one of the clips and would make a noise when moving always sounded like it was inside when it was actually outside against the screen .Did the lecky clean out the filter as there can be a load of debris inside . If you remove the pollen filter you can see up inside and clean that area out there could be a loose leaf still caught there .
