Okay had my first look close up at VW dealer today , my summarization is as follows . Did I like it well no not really $45K for a base model for a box with two front seats and not much else inside . Yes they have redesigned the rear tailgate to match the same side of body profiles and the rear glass seems a bit larger and the bumper and tail lights are new . At the front new bonnet grill lights etc are also new but it seems like they just used a T5 and changed the front and the rear as it was the easiest thing to do , indicators on the front guards larger and sort of flashier in appearance . Inside yes complete new dash and again they have used parts of the old one , the light switch is the same except it sticks out more because of the dash curve . Now the dumbest thing of all again this goes to the heart of many previous VW problems where they do not take into account our climate . What sort of moron in VW design and engineering was so stupid as to put the bloody drink holders into the top of the dashboard , I was there at 9am with air temp around 27 C I removed the drink holder which was red hot to touch , so my cold can of drink would be warmed up nicely in about three minute to air temperature . If and I will stand corrected if these are in some way connected to the cars aircon then maybe it will be okay . I remember I think the Nissan X trail model that had cooling drink holders in the dash to maintain the cold temperature . The VW holders would be okay for those poor cold bastards in Europe who need hot drinks to keep their hands warm , but here its the other way around . So no petrol models which fly's in the face of the earlier in the year report that a Turbo petrol was on the list for Australia , so I think if I was in the market for a new van I would wait until later next year when the T5.1 is on its last gasp and the dealers are desperate to get rid of them I would pick one up at a substantial discount which I was able to do with my wife's current drive . Please don't get me wrong I still love the way these vans drive but I wonder if they went back to some basics in engineering and did some localised research they would be a better buy .

I spoke to dealer a number of times now about LWB 4motion. I'm wanting rhs slider with glass and would also like rear seat (ie crewvan).
Told crew van not available in 4 motion so will have to do rear seat after delivery. I didn't think about the rear air cond. ducting.
6 months wait for any van ordered.
Question: Is the rear diff lock a worth while investment? ($1200)

That depends on the kind of off-roading you plan to do. For me it'd be a no brainer. It's a cheap option for the ability it adds. I really wish I had one in my LWB 4-motion (lifted and big all terrains). It's still remarkable the places it'll go, but it would do some of them a little more easily with the locker.

    Gotta get Rear Diff Lock
Although I don't use it much, it's great to have on in sand and especially mud.
I'm not certain, but I think the AWD system changes with diff lock on --> instead of braking the spinning wheel, it diverts power to wheels that aren't spinning. As well as locking rear diff.
I've been bogged in sand with high pressure in tyres, but never in mud... it just keeps going!

So does anyone know what the new T6 offers us, compared to the T5?

Call me sceptical but I will repeat for the changes made mainly cosmetic and a few technology upgrades radio etc . I cannot see the value anymore . I keep seeing ads on Tv for 4wd passenger SUV's fully loaded for the same money . A box on 4 wheels with two seats and not much else inside seems to be a bit hard to swallow for $45k . Maybe if it was a complete change then maybe it is worth it but it still looks like a T5 upgrade , nothing like when the T4 was phased out for the T5 release . Now if they had maybe given some more options of different engines etc and some of the features others have mentioned , then it may be something different .

Sadly I agree with you Sunny. It's beginning to look like a dashboard upgrade with a couple of previous options made standard. A massive frustration is the limitations VW Australia have placed on models/specs available. No Tdi400 in Crewvan, no 4motion Crewvan, no factory 2nd row in Transporter (which you need to order if your want LWB,4motion,Tdi400), no TDi450 in any Transporter. Yet you go to VW UK website and they offer vans in spec levels like of Startline Trendline and Highline with more options and configurations. Our vans may start with a higher base-level spec but that's all, and if you have to factory order anyway why limit the availablity. The recent Fed governments announcement on changes allowing a less then 12month old, under 500km vehicle to be privately imported sounds very promising but too far away for me. I like it not because I might be able to buy cheaper, rather because I have a far greater ability to buy what I really want.

I agree with you on the import thing a mate of mine is a 4 Motion fan and he is going to wait until the new rules apply , then he is flying to the UK to get the van he wants then he is going to do a Europe road trip holiday as well be fore bring it back with him . I was just peed off that they did not release the 2.0 Turbo petrol one , I saw the figures on a UK website early last year and I would have been happy to put an order in for one .
