Thanks guys. Given the feedback it seems not too many concerns regarding the DSG or if there are on balance its still
a great van and worth the compromise. Cant wait to test drive one soon....

Yes don,t let my rantings put you off as most members will quickly point out and I would agree so far the DSG has not been plagued with mechanical failures . It is evident that VW had some issues and software updates sorted those out , it was just a pity that they VW changed their stance on service intervals after the Triptronic was finished production .

Be sure to get the extended warranty thrown in for free or something.

This is the part that really should be remembered, especially by VW Aust.

I had my A6 changed under warranty a few years ago, ironically after I had it serviced by the dealer at my request as a form of preventative maintenance even though I wasn't required according to my vehicle's service schedule book. I'm tempted to get direct feedback from the supplier through the dealer on what exactly was done to the supplied unit to ensure the issues with the orginal don't happen again. I 'll add when speaking to a salesman of another VW dealer when I was considering buying a T5GP a few months ago the first thing the chap said was we always thoroughly "suss out" auto T5's during trade-in evaluations, this said after I mentioned it wasn't the original box.

Oops not really relevant to this thread...so maybe this is better...has anyone seen any MY13 T5's in dealers? VW Aust. website still shows MY12 specs in download section.

For the money/size/space/mechanicals argument...I reckon that the Ford Transit is worth more of a squiz than the Hyundai. But then the ILoad is selling by the boatload so what would I know?

Yeah, probably many are switching from 1990 Ford Econovan or Mitsubishi L300 and never seat it the T5 or MB Vito.

I've got to say the best van I have ever driven was MB Spriter with sprint shift. It was an ex Ambo so it had a few upgrades and most of my driving was reasonably long trips. It would happily cruise all day at 140+Km/h in the NT. Normal driving at 110 it would only use about 10.5l/100km. Ambo seats had adjustment and suspension in every possibly direction. Arm rests. Aux Heater. Rear Air con. But it's a big van. You can still parralel park it in the street but it wont go under many car parks.

    Happy Days.

It's true, I had a customer driving a Hiace and let him drive my Transporter for a quick squirt and he couldn't believe how well the T5 drove, or how much better and car-like over the Hiace, he kept opening and closing the driver's door listening to the vastly more solid thud it made and instantly noticed how much space he had between the side window and his shoulder, mind you my T5 had 110,000km at the time and his Hiace was 7 months old.

I won't get into the Multivan versus Hundai comparison, as that would be just silly from my point of view, but in terms of engine I might make a comment...:
It really comes down to load IMO - for normal use the TDI340 (Single Turbo) is more than ample. If you tell me that you also be towing a boat/horse-float/camper van I'd probably steer towards the twin turbo.
The other benefit of this is that if you are quick, the TDI340s are on a drive-away campaign ($49,990) - now if you look for a reasonable young second hand one, it will still cost you late 30s to mid 40s and you may enherit someone elses drama.
As far as I am aware we had no dramas with the DSGs in the T5s/Multivans - mainly Polos & Golfs seem to be the culprits, but I guess the extended warranty is not a bad idea.

Interesting comments from a VW dealer there , why would you say for $30-40 k you can buy one second hand late model but "might inherit someone else,s dramas " Inside information ???/
