My (very optimistic) MFD tries to tell me I get 6.3-7.2 l/100km for my highway cruising (actual 100-110Kmh, depending on speed limits), but my fill to fill calculations suggests the real consumption is closer to 7.5-8.5 l/100km.

LWB 128Kw 6sp manual, stock as a rock mechanically, nothing external to add wind drag, med load.

I notice that short trips with cold starts really chews through the diesel, as do cross winds (worse than head winds, strangely enough). Cold weather and wet roads increase consumption, but air con doesn't seem to make much of a difference (less than 0.5 l/100km ).

I drive gently most of the time, with the odd burst of accleration here and there to alleviate the boredom eg gave an unsuspecting motorcyclist quite a surprise at the 100kmh sign at the bottom of the steep hill just north of Buledelah on Friday, I'm sure he didn't expect my big white box on wheels to stay in front of him up to 140 or so. Just as well speed traps aren't set up on uphills very often )

I average 13l/100 with my gasoline 92 Westfalia full camper....
And it's a mix of small trajets in town, some low speed on paths during holydays, some winter in mountains trips for skiing and sustained 110-130 km/h long travels on highways.

No....we don't. Well there's a few old blokes that do but nobody understands them....we only nod, smile and pretend we do just so they don't feel left out.

As for fuel economy....my 2001 double cab syncro TDI manages about 8.5 L/100km around town but blows out to 11 to 13 L/100km on the open road depending on cruise speed (typically 105-110km/h), load weight and wind speed & direction.

This mismatch (typically most cars have fuel consumption on the open road that is better than city) is all down to the final drive gearing and too many revs (2600?) at Australian cruising speeds.

OK, I have changed my consumption icon by the more understandable L/100

I just did a trip to the ACT from Newcastle with 3 mates, 4 mountain bikes, and all our gear. Sat on 119km/h(110zone) or 108(100zone)(GPS speed) , 3 days running around Canberra area and the trip computer said 9.2 but was an actual 9.6l/100. I'm happy with those numbers!

It's more than OK for automatic.

    Reviving this old thread ....

I'm researching a Multivan / Caravelle as I need something with 7+ seats and am interested in fuel consumption .... interested in the V6 as well as the TDI ... so anybody have any updates?

Looking at getting a 2007/2008 model and as yet undecided on manual v auto and V6 v TDI.

I'm still getting just under 10 for around town and low 9's on trips. TDi Auto Multivan.

I was just having a look for used vans and came across this one, I have no link to the seller just an FYI.

Auto TDI will always be quicker from the traffic lights than manual TDI. I don't think that there is too much difference in the fuel economy between manual and auto TDI. V6 is the fastest and quite economical too.
I still would buy 4Motion 128kW today since the updated one is not available yet.

Funny enough, this is 1 area where I'm not too fussed about its performance ... (I know its a bit of a departure ... must be getting old )

It will be used for school runs (3 kids and their friends mean many seats needed), possibly city driving (daily) and long distance family trips.

I like the Tig so much lately I might be keeping it (for me) instead of getting the R next year. If so the Tig will be getting some serious upgrades to make up for it. Or might have 3 VWs in the family .... ...
