    Multivan electric brake controller

    Hi Folks

    New to the forums, so please excuse errors etc.

    We own a 2010 Mutlivan Comfortline with a factory towball and wiring loom. Came with the converter for 13 pin round to 7 pin flat.

    Looking to buy a Jayco Swan that exceeds 750kg's so I understand I'll legally need to install an electric brake controller (EBC) in the vehicle to utilize the electric brakes on the camper. I've searched a thousand posts on this forum and similar and can't find a simple soultion to what seems a simple issue.

    Does anyone have experience with the installation of the EBC in a Multivan? I've seen lots of threads regarding Tourags that indicate a socket is accessible under the dash which allows relative simple installation, but my auto electrician hasn't done this on a VW before and the dealer seems similarly confused.

    Any advice/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    You need to use the 12V output from the hall sensor on the brake master cylinder as a trigger for the electric brakes.

    Gone are the days of tapping into brake lights and brake pedal switches.

    There's also a wire in one of the spare sockets under the passenger's seat that is a brake light signal as well. Whether you can use this without upsetting the body control module, I'm not sure.

    Thanks Umai... if the auto elec taps into either the 12V output on the master cylinder or a spare socket under the seat, will it still require modifications all the way back to the 13-pin socket? The 13 to 7 converter takes pin #12 (listed as 'not used' in most wiring diagrams") into pin 5 on the flat plug which I believe is the connection to the electric braking system.

    Yeah, that's supposed to be for trailer foglights, from memory.

    You will also find the Jayco Swan exceeds the towball weight which 100kg and the Jayco Swan is 115kg.

    Anyone know the reason VW lowered the tow ball weight for GP's over earlier T5's?

    I tried to find that same answer with no luck - structurally how the towbar is attached and the impact on driving if the towball weight was too high.

    We have just been though this and decided it was not viable to risk due to insurance and being illegal even though unlikely for anything to happen. The jayco swan with a single bottle and pole and tarps in the front was 150kgs.

    Should be the same.

    Same part number on the towbar, for genuine that is.
