    Multivan Cargo area protection

I have removed my captains chairs and have slid the bench seat forward so I have a large cargo area in the rear, mainly for mountain and kids bikes and any other junk that needs to be hauled around.

I was thinking of getting a canvas liner made that covers the floor and all 3 sides up to window sill height and have a flap at the rear to protect the tailgate. It would have eyelets around the top edge so you could use a occy strap over the grab handles and head rests to keep it up.

I talked to a motor trimmer that I have used before and he said between $350-$450 depending on what material used.

Has anyone done anything similar or have a better suggestion?

I have seen rubber mats that go in the cargo area of a van.

    Could be worth looking into?

I know its not going to protect the sides but its worth a start.

Ill have a look for more info.

Unless you pad it on the "van" side the coarse canvas could wear the paint wherever it rubs. Sounds like a good idea though. Presumably you would have zips or clips or something for the sliding door and tailgate openings ?

Rubber-backed canvas might be an idea if there's a risk of spills (oil, etc). Beware of using occy straps if there's a risk of them being under high tension - when they let go, they can do a lot of damage.

Thanks for the thoughts guys......some more things to think about. I had some old removalist blankets (can find them now)that would have worked well for the sides. I will investigate a little further and see what I can come up with.

I was actually thinking of using marine carpet glued to the sides and rear door. It's washable, and actualy looks good. You can get colours to match the existing grey plastic finish to make it all blend. The carpet is waterproof, and is hard to stain.

I had a look at bunnings today. They had picnic blankets 1.75x1.35 plastic on one side and blankety material on the other for $9.95. I could buy 6 of these, get them stitched together.

They also had some marine stile carpets that were sof to touch one side and rubber on the other.

Both of these would provide the padding/soft side against the body trim and leave the hard wearing side for my bikes etc.

Had another thought - what about the padded canvas sheets they use to protect the inside of elevators when moving stuff? A removalist company might be able to point you to a supplier or maybe a construction company as they also use them when the elevators have gone into a high rise project.

That would work well, I will see if I can track some down.
