In most cases you can buy only the bits you actually need.
Thanks to some B##S###$ this morning on the kids school run took out our drivers side mirror. Must have been low speed, hasn't damaged the glass or even marked the mirror housing - but snapped the plastic what appears to be inner tube that connects to the door - clean snap - now hanging by the cable.
Anyone got an idea what that is worth?
Had a premonition of something happening just 10 minutes beforehand - come out side the school and there you go.

Have the dealership look at it. The current models have the radio and GPS antennae in the mirrors, meaning they're a bit fragile, therefore can be expensive to repair.
From memory, the outer shell/cover is single use, meaning you'll break all the securing tabs when you remove it to repair the mirror.

Just spoke to them... and its looking like an insurnace claim now - they are saying anywhere from $300 to $800.. bloody hell!
Same thing happened to mine. Mirror and cover were ok, but the tube and plastic mount were broken.
Bought a new assembly from the local dealer and fitted it myself. Cost was $275 plus a few hours of my time.

Yep 05 models are much the same price but no antennae if I remember correctly there are several parts the back shell then there is the halo then there is a bottom filler piece next the actual mirror and last but not least the whole internal support piece made of die cast alloy . I have broken my drivers side twice both mirrors smashed and the halo once , the third time I tore the whole bloody thing completley off did not break any plastics or mirror just sheared of all the mount bolts . As I did not want to drive 50 kays with it hanging I used a cordless and screwed it back with some self taper screws still there today looks normal .Link here to photos with it hanging and after refit plus clean up colour paint transfer from pole .http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...ars-66891.html

I snapped mine off about 3 weeks ago.. It is a stupid design. The mirror has no flex when pushed forward. It needs to move up or down.
I paid $270 to replace all the parts except the actual mirror from col crawford Brookvale.
The actual repair is not too hard.
1) remove the door liner. about 4 screws and some push fastener's. Unplug the mirror control and unscrew the door release on the back of the door. Unplug the mirror harness.
2) undo 3 bolts on the inside of the door that hold the mirror and remove.
3) to remove the mirror from the old housing you need to remove the black backing on the mirror. This is easily done once you have seen inside one but the easy way to remove this cover is the push into the slot that runs horizontal across the leading face of the mirror to release this part of the cover and lift it up.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Andy
