loss of acceleration issue in 2008 multivan comfortline.

Vehicle 2008 2.5 diesel multivan comfortline.

Headed off on holiday yesterday and suddenly the diesel engine fault line came on at the same time as I lost acceleration, engine still on. Put the foot down on the accelerator, but hardly any acceleration. There was a very small amount of acceleration but it was very very little. Drove for a minute and then stopped car and turned off engine. I then immediately turned it back on and problem was gone, no lights on or acceleration issues. Kept driving and then about 40 minutes later same problem again. Stopped the car and turned it off. Immediately turned back on and car was back to normal with no light on or acceleration problem.

Anyway rather than risk something bad decided to head back home. On the one hour journey back home the problem did not show up at all.

Before I go to VW next week anyone with any ideas. I did not hear any unusual sounds etc

    thanks

Welcome to the technical nightmare that is VW [along with most of todays cars ] what you experienced was "Limp " mode have experienced it my self many times the first time was just after we bought ours new decending Cunninghams Gap at night in the rain I engaged the manual mode 3rd gear to hold the speed going down the range as I approached the flat I put my foot down and forgot to change gears result the over rev caused the "Limp " mode to start , drove fro 40ks before I finally did what you did turned of and on and then all good again . It still occurs today with no warning but mainly when I slow to turn a corner and then accelerate up hill it just dies > So turn off and on and up we go , this apparently can be caused by the turbo not spooling up to proper speed and then because of the interconnection of the onboard computers and sensors etc they have a brain fart and bingo you have the infamous "Limp " mode syndrome , you could get it diagnosed to see if there is some fault but from our experience there is no logic it just happens so good luck and if you get a result please let us know what happened .

Some of the emission related faults will reset itself, when you turn the key off, only to come back again, when driven for a bit more than 5 minutes, usually over 1/2 drive or so. That could go like that for some time until it's fixed. Get it looked at.

Limp mode sucks (although I suppose it's saving something going bang).

Given mine is still under warranty it was nice and easy, don't happen to have extended warranty do you?

In my case it was collapsed DPF internals causing a exhaust restriction at full load or acceleration. All fixed now.
