    Looking for T3 Caravelle or Twincab

    Hi all,

    New to the world of watercooled vws. Wanting to purchase a really good condition T3 Twincab or Caravelle. Having difficulties finding either. Any suggestions on how to best track down either of these options would be greatly appreciated. Have tried other vw sites with no luck. Have a budget of approx $13000 which I would think should cover either option. Sydney based.

    There is a large difference in price for the two models you are interested in.
    I was talking to a guy from Tas. with a dual cab at the last Day Of The Volkswagen at Glenelg. He told me he had been offered $18,000 for his where as a Caravelle could be bought for between $3,000 to $4,000.
    With a vehicle as rare as these you need to take your time & eventually a good one will turn uip. Check out carsales.com.au & trading post on the net.
    Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

    For that sort of budget you'd get a decent T4 in either body style.

    Is there any particular reason why you'd prefer the comparatively ultra rare T3 given the fact that: a) T3 parts are getting harder and more exey to come by; and b) the T4 is arguably more comfortable/driveable especially around town?

    Just a personal preference for the T3. Its the last of the rear engine models. Have always had aircooled models previously. Want a slighly more modern vehicle but not as modern as a T4.

    I agree if I was to look at it logically and rationally the T4 would make more sense. Especially from a fuel economy, parts and driveability sense. The T4 IMHO lacks the character of the earlier models. The T3 just appeals more.

    Thought that might be the case!! Same reason why I'm attracted to old Land Rovers....rational thought be damned.

    You could always get a T4 dual cab and convert it by changing over to a rear mounted Porsche 996 engine and transaxle....would that provide enough character? Might be a bit budget unfriendly though!!

    Yep I have seen this and noticed the twincab in the background. Contacted the owner and politely requested that he sell me his twincab. Found out that the Twin is an auto model and that he won't sell until he has something to replace it. The single cab is nice but not suitable for the kids as well.
