I took my remote key to get one cut for $15 bucks. Lock it in the car and put the cut key in my wetsuit, though the cut key opens every lock on my van.

Hi,
I use my 2010 T5 as a W/surfing van and am forced to have to hide the remote key on the vehicle somewhere while I go sailing which isn't very safe.
On my previous HiAce van I simply carried the fixed key with me as salt water wasn't an issue with it.
Would the T5 fixed key be effected by water?
If so is there an easier way to unlock the tailgate with just the fixed key?
At present as far as I can see it's a rather involved process to just unlock the tailgate only,
I have to first unlock the drivers door, then switch on the ignition and only then can I use the central locking button in the drivers door to unlock the tailgate (which doesn't have a lock cylinder) all this while dripping with salt water
Thanx

I bought a special waterproof key pouch then I just tucked into the back of my wet suit , it had a small lanyard to wear around your neck to keep from losing it works perfectly .
Thanx heaps for the replies.
So I gather there is no way to unlock just the tailgate with the fixed key (not the remote one) from the outside with out having to switch the ign. on?
My 2012 T5 only has a lock cyl on the drivers door
There is no key-operated lock on the tailgate.
Getting a 'surf' key cut, and locking your transponder key in the car is probably the best way to go.

I would of thought that the settings would be possible to change so all the door unlock via the drivers door lock.
Having a non remote key would be fine with the salt as the chip is sealed and there are no electronics in the key. I'm fairly certain though that the dealers can't do non remote "valet" keys for these though, I have phoned them before to see if it's possible for 07+ and have always been told no.. it is possible though for a Locksmith to do it though. One thing to keep in mind though is with most 07+ VW's depending on how the key is coded to the car it can stop the dealer from being able to ad keys, they have a stupid system that locks them out when "unauthorized" keys are programmed.
Doesn't even need a chip in it if all you're doing is locking and unlocking via the drivers door.
