    Intermittant trouble starting

    Hi All,
Going to book with auto elec for the following trouble and hoped some here could add some thoughts in the mean time.

Van starts normally 9 times out of ten However that 1/10 when hot, soon after switch off, it will crank like the battery is just about dead. It took three goes to start yesterday for example where every attempt it seemed like the battery was providing less juice each time. 4th go and it started like nothing was wrong. I'm thinking it's most likely the starter buy wonder why it would start normally most times and then almost fail once. My battery is actually the original, that is dates back to June 2007. Van has done just over 201,000km.

Maybe try a new battery.Yours sounds like it has had a good run.Have you had it checked?
I'm also thinking an intermittent bad connection
You have checked the battery terminals for security/tightness

Get the startermotor tested as well as the battery. Did you have the recall 97W8 done?

Battery was checked recently. As to recall, I think there is a sticker on the inside of the door opening, will check in the morning. If not what was it in reference to? Thanks so far.
Edit: just remembered that's the cooling fan problem, never heard the fan run for too long after shutdown.

It's related to the electrical wiring from front of the vehicle to the inside fuse box. Volkswagen—Volkswagen Transporter

Never take too seriously the description of the recall. The fusebox recall for 2010 Tiguan is a good example that. The description of the possible fault doesn't say what actually happens when that component fails.

my van had exactly the same symptoms. i changed the tandem pump at the same time for a totally different reason and to my surprise these symptoms were also gone. it doesnt make sense to me i dont see how it could have happened, but that was just my experience.
are the slow crank symptoms the only ones you have, or is there anything else?

Just slow crank like a dead battery, almost always when warm/hot and then after upto three goes, will start normally. But it's intermittent apart from warm/hot when it does it. Never done it cold or first start of the day and van is parked outdoors.

If it's slow to crank when hot, I'd be looking at the starter motor.

First point of call just struggling for some time and I know it gets more risky delaying it. At least on country runs I can keep the engine running lol, can't lock it with engine running in metro areas. I haven't even looked to find the starter motor such has been my trouble free driving apart from camshaft last Nov.
