    installing aftermarket stereo in T5

Are there any issues with installing an Alpine CD player in a T5?

    There shouldn't be.
I'm looking to replace my standard radio very soon in my T5, I want reversing camera with big screen, so thinking similar unit to AVC9000 only the one that is for Golf4 range.
Which Alpine unit are you getting?

Not sure which unit... just need one that connects to an iPod and is easy to navigate.
The guy at the shop was telling me I need to pay for some DIN converter or something which was about $400. He reckons all european cars need this.

Make sure you get power to the ariel.

There is a booster thing somewhere in the dash...

    No power crap signal.

And watch out you don't end up with power drain after everything should be "asleep" - a common problem with aftermarket installations in VAG vehicles.

    Not only aftermarket.
My T5 was in the dealer shop to have a look at the sat nav (still not fixed), and when we got it back it now does not turn off when the the van is powered off.

The power drain I'm referring to is more insidious than that - everything looks like it is switched off, but one unit is polling the other all the time, so it never switches off properly (ie goes to sleep), thus draining more power than it should. I gather it is something to do with the canbus connections. Quite a few threads on this forum refer to the problem, mostly related to changed AVEs.

Usually only noticed if the vehicle isn't driven for a few days or more, if you drive every day or every second day the battery gets charged up again before it gets flat enough for you to notice.

Vans made before 2006 have no CAN BUS radio, so there shouldn’t be a problem when you change the radio in those.

T5's Battery drain in my T5 is 100mA when the van is in rest and locked.
Golf5 with CAN BUS is less than 20mA.

For how to check for excessive battery drain, look in the section T5 How to do this and that, post 9

Remember to not wire the K-line wires in. Otherwise the VW technician will have to remove and unplug the radio everytime they want to hook the diagnostic computer up.
