I was reading the weekly GoAuto newsletter (9/1)and came across an article referring primarily to grey imports however the following paragraph really had me excited:

If I read this right we may be able to for example import a tdi450 4motion Crewvan or even tdi450 Caravelle with wing doors which would solve all my problems in one hit...“Manufacturers now have three months (down from 18 months) from the time a new model is released overseas to supply it to the Australian market. Failure to do so means that enthusiasts can then apply for the model to become eligible for independent importation. “The Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme, in its current form, will be phased out over the next two years, with a heavily revised SEVs taking its place. “Crucially, the new scheme allows model variants to be independently imported if they haven’t been sold in Australia by the manufacturer, granting access to a plethora of new vehicles that have never been seen on Australian roads.
I thought the government dropped all the protection and import costs on new cars bought and imported by owner a couple of years back , it was primarily in place to stop people buying a cars themselves from overseas before the 12 months ownership period had expired there fore protecting local dealers . Then last year I think the government did a back flip and reinstated the same restrictions and costs , personally I think pressure from the motor industry big importers made the government overturn their original decision . Seems they don,t like competition , same thing goes for spare parts everything here is three times the price it is overseas and the federal government then stuck the GST on imported prices so they protect the local dealer prices .
