    This to the administraters .

Is there just me or are there others who live out country.

We dammit dont have the internet options you guys in the cities do. My daughter in Adelaide pays $49 mnth unlimited download..therefore can pull down movies all the time, we live 22 k out of Pt Limcoln Eyre Pen and can only get satalite coonection 5GB shaped thats 1GB daytine and 4GB over nite Syd time for the same price..

So looking at photos ore than once gets very expensive, SO is it possible to have thumbnails.....yeah I accept the fact the city guys will yell.

Maybe this could be sent to the VW watercooled forum heavies

Thoughts and comments please, Ive got tough skin

i know your pain. my parents like in the country and when i visit it takes ages to load a page with large pic files on it. i would click it then go away and do something for 20min and come back and it would be 3/4 loaded haha.

Have you tried changing your internet options to not show images ?
I did this when I was accessing via mobile phone to reduce bandwidth and speed it up.

I'm on a property 60kms Nth of Townsville and only had Satellite until recently.
I think the issue lays with people who just blindly include repeated photos with the thread. It's an internet courtesy to not do this, same as use of upper case, poor spelling and the young blokes with their SMS speak on these boards.
If people would pay a bit more attention to their formatting etc, it wouldn't be as big an issue.
I personally want to be able to see full size photos for detail where relevant.

Heck, it was only 3 years ago we got ADSL into our estate on the Gold Coast, prior to that we could only get dial-up because of an outmoded rim and more than 2km from the exchange. Still can't get ADSL2 and we're in the second fastest growing spot in the country.

So I hear the pain of big pic downloads but I also agree it's nice, in fact very useful sometimes to view larger pics.

I work with PhotoShop every day for print and web, and just in case anyone is using programs like PhotoShop to adjust photos and isn't fully familiar with getting the most compact files:

    • Optimum resolution for the web is 100dpi. This is a nice round figure for dealing with different types of monitors. Anything higher is not needed.
    • Reduce oversize file dimensions in pixels to the maximum recommended for the forum on the longest edge (I think this is in a sticky thread on submitting pictures).
    • When saving files, use 'Save For Web' and a compression setting that gives a good compromise between visual quality and file size. Try hopping between compression levels and seeing if 'High' really is that much different from 'Medium'. Also, if you really want to go to town (or is that the country?) use the download speed reference set to 28.8Kbps and keep in mind that over 30 seconds is a long time to wait and compounds when there are multiple images on a single page.

I agree. I have (slowish) ADSL and I often bail from a thread if it is full of photos and taking too long to load. Life is too short to waste too much time waiting to see something I'm probably not that interested in anyway.

Maybe there should be a size limit on photos in threads like there is for photos in signatures ? With a special photo section for the pictures that really do need to be big/high res.

The size of the images at least the one I put in my post is 125kb I don't think it is too large . Below are some sample pictures in different sizes; you can try clicking on the links, if it makes any difference.

Just clink on the links to check how quickly the pictures open. You will most likely find out that they open at the same speed since it is more dependent from the network traffic rather than how big the image is.
    This one is 96x96dpi (92kb) http://lh4.ggpht.com/_std7SMZaoXg/S7...0in%20snow.jpg
