Well done, I dread this happening to mine I've thought about spraying something into the lock, but haven't so far as I like to let sleeping dogs lie.
Broke the folding key part off the fob the other day and had to resort to the manual spare key {could not find the second fob DOH ! } So been using the spare key for the last few days and then this morning the actual barrel just decided it would not turn , no matter what I did jiggling the key turning the wheel slightly off the rest position putting it in and out of gear still no joy . Finally it turned whew ! and got home from the shops, then the fun began. Pumped some lithium grease into the key slot still no success so decided to remove the whole thing to see what was going on . Nice work VW putting security bolts in to attach the barrel to the column, these are the ones that obviously have some sort of head to tighten them but they are designed to snap off to then prevent any one from removing them again . But I,m not one to give up and as usual worked out that if I used the tip of an air chisel blade to spin the bolt undone , once it started to turn the two bolts came out easily by fingers !. Once I had the barrel out I filled all the openings with heavy oil until it was dribbling out of every orifice . Refitted with new allen key headed bolts from my Moto Cross bike kit {thank you Honda } and it works like a charm again . Now just going to locksmith this week for some new keys and fobs .

I've always thought the spring that you turn the key against when starting the van is a little excessive... A lot more pressure required than on my previous Tiguan. Not sure why that is, but does put a lot of strain on the fob when starting.

Well ours is 12 years old so lots of turning during that time .
Follow up on the key and ignition , found a place here on the southside of Brisbane who repaired the broken key fob and the recoded a brand new one as well , very happy with service and price was just on $300 for the two fobs .
