    regarding your mates T5 with software upgrade.......I suspect his dealer does not know what they are doing or upgrading. There have been other members on here that took their vans back numerous times, and finally, they found the upgrade. Some dealers are confusing a recall for software with the software upgrade. They are not the same.
    If done properly, there is a noticeable difference.

    Yes I have told him not to let them ignore his requests as I suspect what you say has happened , this same service centre were the ones who wanted to change the cam belt in our T5 5years ago hmmmmmm its gear driven guys , and again they tried when it was in for service last time .They never learn .

    I thought I would ask a question on my own thread , there have been several forum members who have had their Triptronic auto serviced can any of you tell me if the filter was replaced cleaned etc and or the sump pan removed for same .

    Just had the oil changed in my 6speed tiptronic two days ago and asked that exact question, the answer was no, no point opening them as they only have a gauze filter which is too coarse to catch any of the fine particles. I now have new oil after 150,000km and also reset the transmission computer module and it appear to be working very well.

    I think this needs investigating. The T4 I owned had a proper paper filter & also a magnet that needs to be cleaned particularly after 150,000km. I changed mine at just over 100,000km from memory & the magnet was full of wiskers. I know Rebuild has changed his, maybe he can confirm whether or not there is a filter.
    Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

    Please keep the answers coming guys because I saw our auto in pieces this afternoon , and the one thing that was pointed out to me at this early stage of disassembly was the "Filter " was virtually completely blocked it is a very fine gauze metal not coarse as was told to Brian J and was black with a slimy residue very evident on the filter surface , the same residue was also very evident on the pan of the box . I wonder whether any VW tech has actually seen one of these as it seems the service method is flawed , why put fresh fluid in and not clean or replace the filter ? makes sense to me . Now the repairer pointed out that whilst the valve bodies was a problem the fact that the filter was partially blocked it would have been this that was causing the auto to slip as we all know the filter is supposed to clean the fluid of any foreign material like clutch fibers etc as it travels through the rest of the box . Therefore when it is blocked in part then the auto will starve for fluid causing the clutch packs to slip and then activate a fault within the electronics . So who,s fault would it then be VW because they don,t service them ? or maybe a dealer fault because they do not remove the pan to clear or replace the filter when servicing . I will follow this particular item as it made so much sense when I saw it . This would also answer the question I asked ages a go when I wanted to know how come turning the car off and then on again would fix it , this was also answered as the flow of fluid moving through the filter is one way when it becomes blocked enough and slips you turn the car off and the fluid drains backwards through the filter , which was why drive was restored obviously the fluid flowing back through the filter would partially clear the filter restoring drive . Will pursue some more information but its becoming clear that this is a major contributor to premature failure ."Interesting"

    The next question could be , what is the slimy residue and where did it come from, is it a component of the oil breaking down, or coming out of the clutch Linings or somewhere. I also asked that genuine VW oil be installed even though they had in stock other oil that met the same specification.

    An alternate theory as to why it recovers when the engine is stopped could be that an error in the ECU (control computer) has been reset, and it can work until something happens again. The theory that it is starving for oil seems a good one to me.

    The other thing that I can add to the sum of information is that my van has done a lot of its total distance on the open highway where it doesn't need to change gears as much, as opposed to all city running.

    Edit: The oil part number used in mine was G055025 A2

    Well the residue looked to me like a dirty residue that would have accumulated over along period of time probably a combination of decaying fluid mixed with minute debris this would settle to the bottom of the pan and any other flat surfaces when the car is stopped , And I agree I also would wonder why drive would be partially restored when turned off but the filter blockage makes much more sense . Our van has done a combination of city and highway so it has had all types of driving circumstances . I am certainly convinced that lack of ability to change the oil and filter is a major mistake with the design , If you put fresh oil in the engine it goes without saying that you change the filter as it would defeat the purpose same should apply to the auto , the clutch packs cannot possibly remain in pristine new condition over the years so some sort of material is going to circulate and end up in the filter .

    Thanks for that I knew there was a pictorial somewhere you can clearly see the gauze section in the filter and the one in the photo was not as bad as mine looked plus his oil looks red mine was black !!! . I just need now to know that if VW now are recommending they be serviced at 60.000 kay intervals is the filter supposed to be cleaned or replaced . Engine oil filters are outside for easy replacement VW obviously would have the filter internally in an auto but if they have changed their routine there should be some guides on what they are supposed top do and a Filter change -clean should be an absolute priority . Love to know ????
