I bought a kit out of the UK. You'll need a 1/2in - 3/4in adaptor for it, unless you already have a 3/4 socket set.

Took about 2 weeks to land.

If you've got a decent rattle gun, you could probably get away with blasting the new bolt up with that.

I don't have a link to the tool, but a link to someone with the same problem.

Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

They're not that hard to do. Way easier than a diesel.

The annoying part is getting the water pump out without breaking the plastic inner belt cover. To do it properly, you need to take the cam gear off, which is usually seized on the cam. Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours without breaking a sweat.

If you search VAG3248 on eBay, the kits will come up. The kit is mostly for the diesel, as all you need for the petrol motor is the counter-hold tool for the harmonic balancer. But I'm sure you can buy that on its own.

VAG3248A is a variation of it that locks the balancer at TDC, using the sealing flanges on the sump and block. I'd be using that one, if you can find it.

i really cant wait that long to get one shipped from overseas..
surely there a forum member in melbourne who has done their timing belt with a tool.. or method that they can share?
ive tried the pipe wrech method, all that did was put a dent on the harmonic balance and bent the tool..
i wonder what if i drop it on a car stand on a timber block and let the weight of the van stop it from turning when i touque it ,
or am i risking snapping or damaging something?

I used a ratchet gun to get it off and to put it back on. Worked for me but you should do what you think is best. Did the same on an Astra.

To be honest, I don't even remember taking it off on the petrol ones I've done. Only the diesels.

From memory, you'd only need to remove it to change the front crank seal.

Silly question when you changed the timing belt did you secure the pulleys to stop them getting out of line , I made this mistake when I did my sons timing belt in his Astra twin overhead cams I locked them both before removal but because the old belt had stretched I had to loosen one of them back one notch to get the new belt on result was it idled lumpy but ran ok had to redo it and then got it right . The point is have you checked the timing marks etc .
