Yes I paid a similar amount for one for my Polo GTI and I did the job myself yesterday. By the sounds of it it was a lot easier to do mine but it was still no walk in the park. Would've been a lot easier if the front seat wasn't there.
After putting up with speeds 3 & 4 on my air con for too long I discovered that it may be the heater resistor. Quotes were a couple of hundred at least so a bit of googling and eBay searching I landed the part for $6.60 delivered.
Finally attacked the task yesterday, after loose instructions from a mate who'd replaced his in his Polo that it was located just behind the glovebox. Anyhow, didn't turn out to be that simple....it was located about halfway down the dash, I'd say arms length, at which stage you then had to remove 2 x 5mm bolts holding it in place, one which you could see, the other was just a guess!
End result, about 4 hours work, but on the plus side I now have working air con speeds 1 and 2 again, and I have the satisfaction of having done a job myself whilst saving a couple of hundred dollars!
Now apparently this is a VW problem, and the resistor resides in the air con ducting to keep it cool. Below is the link to the eBay part if anyone is experiencing the same problem. And of course I am happy to provide some pointers if anyone is contemplating a DIY job, just don't expect me to spend another 2 hours as a contortionist, that pleasure can be all yours! Oh, and I only lost 1 screw down the guts of the dash, so at least I know when that annoying rattle develops what the culprit was!

I had every panel off except for the one that I reckon could've provided me with direct access. Front seat space is not an issue in mine, I just needed triple jointed 4 foot long arms!
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Was it the actual fan that you removed , I did mine a year or two back as the brushes had just worn out and were not replaceable . I got mine out from under the dash on the pass side by removing the lower covers it was fairly easy to do .
No just had to replace the resistor. That panel that would have saved a bucket load of time was the only one I couldn't remove, and trust me I removed a bunch of them! Thankfully that turned out to be my problem!
It's just like replacing a fuse when one shorts. But agree wouldn't wish it upon my enemy to install themselves. I remember lying on my back in the right passenger footwell just unscrew everything, as you can't see the screws.
But still better than getting dealer to it. Firstly the markup on the part and then the labour cost.

Yep that sounds like my Anzac day! Genuine part was $96, so for the sake of a few hours labour I'm pretty happy. Now just on to the other jobs that need doing!
