Check to see if its a genuine VW RNS series or a copy cat aftermarket one , there are lots of aftermarket ones that fit the same aperture . A lot of the aftermarket ones once fitted have poor AM and FM reception due to the factory ones being sort of tuned to the cars own anntenne . I have changed both of ours with aftermarket and the AM FM was crap , so I fitted an external roof mount which improved reception . Since then I have discovered the joy of online internet radio which I then bluetooth to the head unit from my phone , as long as you have a reasonable download allowance it is really good . One last thing some of the early VW vans had the antennae built into the windscreen so if it has been replaced with a cheaper one there would be no reception at all. On later series VW mounted antennae inside the front door external mirrors using diversity technology , that means the anntenae will switch from one mirror to the other depending on which one picks up the strongest signal from the station . Last one the VW antennae are powered through the CAN bus system , and aftermarket head units don,t seem to have the capability to power up the anntenae . Some of the installation centres have awork around to power up the VW antennae . Removing the head unit is a piece of cake unclip the tray above the head unit by pulling it upwards just over the top when the tray is removed there are two torx screws to remove , then pull the front facia off and there will be 2 torx screws on the outer side of the head unit . Just pull it out and all you need is right there , check to see if the antennae plug is correctly fitted .

Personally over the years as I get older and grumpier I find the announcers on most commercial radio stations just aggravate the hell out of me with their inane stupid humour , too many adds and idiots trying to be funny . But now I have discoverd an online radio network out of Europe that plays my kind of music and does not have live announcers and only the odd station promo . Have you removed the unit to check brand and connections ?
