Yes as we live on an island continent , car makers have us by the short and curlies as they know its too restrictive for the average punter to bring something in from overseas . Now after Sunday 1st July our lovely politicians in Canberra will push the goal posts even further back by slugging us with GST on anything bought on the net from overseas . And the galling part is they claim its to put local companies on a level playing field with overseas companies yeah sure it is Malcom . Simple example of pricing disparity I priced a glass for a sunroof first from Subaru here $1898 incl GST , meantime from dozens of dealers in the US no more than $500 for the same part level playing field I think not . Sorry to go off subject but I hope you get an economical option for the repair replacement , from what you have said trading it is as an option that will cost you dearly . Seems so wrong these days that a vehicle costing $50 K plus is reduced to a $3K trade in after only 6 or 7 years . Its fine for dealers to charge those prices new but repairs will just crucify you after such a short time .

Wreckers charge what the market will stand. I can't see any point in paying [in some cases] 90% of new price for a part that could be half or more worn out. One of my neighbours priced a chain tensioner for his Nissan, $95 from wrecker, $100 + post from Victoria for new aftermarket.
I friend told me once, that the cheapest way is to buy a complete write off from the auctions. Take off all the parts you need & sell the rest for scrap steel.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Thats what I said earlier as there was a late model which had caught fire , now sure lots of the plastic parts would have melted but I am sure the engine would stand some heat as the fire seemed to come from inside the passengers area not from the engine bay .

Except the rocker cover and upper intake manifold are plastic, as well as various cooling system parts.

Once those have melted away, the likelihood of contaminants in the intake, valve train and cooling system are quite high.

    Always pays to compare prices.

New rack for a Golf/Passat/Caddy is around $3K new from VW.

Less than $200 from a wrecker.

Could I fit a 4motion engine/box/transfer in place of the cfca? Would mean deleting the dpf and a few other things. Mount would probably have be made, Diff ratio swapped in.

BUT otherwise... Could it be done?

Nothings impossible but it does come down to how much effort you want to put in , there is so much geometry in drive shafts engine mounts but like I said it comes down to how much effort . I know back many years ago in the early 70,s I decided that my 4 cylinder 1600cc powered Hi Ace van was not cutting it , so without any real mechanical experience decided a Holden 186 6 cylinder engine with auto would fit ! . It took around a week to fabricate new engine mounts new gearbox mounts and then custom make a new 2 inch exhaust all with a electric arc welder ! even the tailshaft was shortened and welded but it did work [not very legal ] so I suppose with some pre measurements maybe something else might fit .

Motor would be essentially be the same as what you have. 4Motion has a DPF, all the mounts are the same, even the front subframe.

Parts listing for the motor differntiates between manual and DSG, but I suspect it's because one of them already has a spigot bush in the crank. I'll try and put some time into comapring part numbers for the internals (pistons, cams, etc), to figure out what long engines are compatible. That way, worst case you're swapping things like manifolds, and maybe the cam cover.
