Also to link the old transmission mechatronics to a new engine will require either a vw dealer or a mechanic with access to the codes.

Not true.

ECU doesn't get changed when the engine is replaced like-for-like, therefore the Mechatronics won't be affected.

Losing oil and coolant (although radiator stop leak has cured that) I get a puff of smoke on take off but was using roughly a litre every 1000kms

I can't find any info on engine swaps for a cfca. Sgs spares says its unique and nothing will bolt in its place. Can anyone confirm this?
