Actually not on all Multivans either. My 2008 Comfortline purchased new, did not have one, and there are no bolt holes in the correct location to put one on.

Yes my 05 Tdi Dual Cab has one, I am going to make one from structural alloy beefed up a bit for off-road protection. For those that don't know the Tdi's have sound reduction covers on the sump and the camshaft/rocker cover.
May be for some of the bolt holes, but not all. They are located for the plastic cover on the outer edge of the engine bay Where the bonnet lock lines up, and the plastic battery cover (about 6 of those plastic screws in all). There are even two extra holes for this but no corresponding hole in the subframe. I recall there was some discussion about this on the Brickyard forum a year or two back. When I purchased the vehicle I quizzed the dealer. At the time they were not equipped with full engine covers. Perhaps the Highlines were? But certainly earlier T5s were. I even looked at a lot of new Multivan Comfortlines at the time and at different dealers, also on Carsales and none of then had full engine covers.
Oh no, no. We're referring to the big plastic belly pan undernieth

Seems a bit inconsistent to me that VW have them on some and not others makes you wonder why ? our two T5,s have them sons T4 has a steel one .
@Sunny43.5 - the answer is simple, cost.
VWA can program a build but each variation/revision impacts the cost. Sometimes we get lucky. If the person responsible at VWA can spend the time and has the expertise, they can mix and match between construction stations and build modules to get the most vehicle for a target price.
eg. If you have the finger on the pulse, you may hear of a cancelled fleet order for the UK. It may include height adjustable headlights for a Transporter. You may grab those for your order at internal discount.
This has to align with marketing. If height adjustable seats are a better "sell" than undertrays - we lose the undertrays...
As to plastic versus steel undertrays - cost and actual use. Out of the > 1,000,000 T5 (June 2009) T5 manufactured, exactly what percentage actually go off road? It would be nice if VW offered the option, but unless there is significant customer request, the factory leaves it up to third parties like Seikel.
I do have one but don't run it. I believe that it will aid in cooling the transmission as well.
