Thread: Emissions crisis, does it affect the vans?

    Apparently the US Government has cancelled the approval for affected VW models with this engine . A bit like our ADR approval once the US cancelled the approval no dealer can sell any affected models until new test are done which can take many many months . I would imagine those dealers will be after some sort of compensation from VW as they may have millions of dollars tied up in non sellable stock .

    It's months if not years away as each variant of a vehicle will require re-certification of the ADR item. It is not a single test required to pass the emission ADR, but a series of tests at intervals while the vehicle accumulates kms. If memory serves me right it is around 80,000 km. That does not happen overnight.

    Ouch and yes I saw your reply in the general section WAI , I was generalising but I can not imagine the litigatious mentality of the Americans to sit back and not take it to court . The dealers will be after blood and then imagine the staff layoffs if they cannot sell cars as well . The fallout will be enormous , the part that is sad is some supporters seem to think this will just go away and leave VW with a squeaky clean report card . Yes they do make some good cars lets face it we all own one or more , it's just a shame they have destroyed confidence and respect .

    There quality has suffered in recent years as there sales have gone up, funny how the bigger a company gets the more cost saving measures they take. I am just dissapointed that they treat us with disregard, think about the poor pple with a DSG comes to mind, and I am on my 3rd Egr. Lol
    German engineering doesn't hold as much water these days.

    And that is the issue. Credibility is everything. It has taken VW a hell of a long time to gain that credibility, and it can all be lost so quickly.

    What I cannot understand is how standard QA monitoring did not pick this up. After all, approvals would have had to have been sought and given at every step along the way. This is not a backyard operation.

    Playing "devil's advocate", it could even be argued that VW have done nothing wrong. It comes down to what is specifically a defeat device, and is probably why fines have not been enforced as yet.

    The rule says that the emission levels must not been exceeded when the test is carried out in accordance with the rule, and they are not. What does the rule say about what the ECU does in real world driving conditions? It is exactly the same ECU that is being used, and if the car was taken back and tested for compliance with the rule, it would still pass. The current rule states nothing about real world conditions or conducting the test on normal roads.

    So, in reality, the regulators are retrospectively extending the rule beyond its stated scope. I wonder how every other vehicle (diesel/petrol/hybrid) would be classified if it were tested as these vehicles were, and if the same outrage would be expressed.

    Again, it is the vacuum of actual information that is making it worse, and there is nothing like a serving of righteous indignation to make you feel a whole lot better.

    I understand that it's a very interesting topic, but I'm failing to see any logic behind how discussing it in the multiple sections have any benefit.
    Please continue this in the general section Volkswagen under investigation over illegal software that masks pollution
    Or if you like reading double posts, in the Passat section and possibly some others.
