    ECU replacement cost?

So before I tackle the stat problem another one has cropped up...

Flashing glow plugs and "Engine Workshop!" error on dash this morning. Engine turns over but won't start. Call the RACV - no fault codes pop up on the VAGCOM. After checking the fuse boxes - fuses SC26 and SC33 also blown.

Looks like it is a failed ECU which is apparently a common failing part for the 2.5TDI. Prior to this, it had been intermittently difficult to start and had other intermittent issues with the central locking which is also an indicator of the above.

My question - has anyone had to replace/repair the ECU and approx how much was it?

Have a look under the passenger's seat at the multifunction connectors, and see if there's anything foreign in the spare plugs.

All of them are pretty much live, and some of them are inputs and outputs to/from the ECU.

    ECU replacement cost?

Not the same car, but this might give you an indication of cost - my friend had to replace the ECU in his VW Golf Mk5 GTI and it was about $3,500 all up.

The ECU itself was around $2,200 and the rest was 'labour charges'.

I looked under both front seats. Only a bit of dust and dog hair which i vacuumed up. Still no joy.... and now the van is locking itself sometimes but not all the time.

Does anybody know if you can remap the ECU while its faulty? I am thinking of asking one of those performance tuning places. They claim they can give you more power and make it more economical at the same time

    I don't think it's an ECU fault.

I'd be looking at an electrical fault.

The van has been hard to start sometimes, it does nothing when you turn the key. Then after between 2 & 6 times it starts. The central locking doesn't always work as it should. Sometimes 1 or the other sliding door won't unlock/lock. Internal lights sometimes turn off/on randomly. The 2 blown fuses noticed today, no 26 & 33 in the bottom panel under bottle holder. Nothing else seemed to be not working with the blown fuses and i'm not sure what fuse card to go by to tell me what they are. 1 card says 26 is a low beam & 33 is radio, radio was definitely working. The other "option" card 26 has a T & a symbol of 12v inside a rectangle and circle and 33 has a T. This van is very frustrating, when it's good, it's great & when it's not it's expensive....

If the engine runs ever, I don't really see the ECU being a problem.
