Anyone had this? Is there a cheaper option than $2k of parts? Both my T5's have had the clacka-clacka at idle sisnce new, but my brother thinks they are on the way out.

The local dealer is a joke - and has most of the auto brands tied up in thi stown! We would have lights pop up on dash - only after a long trip, and would dissapear for weeks if you restarted. We would pull up at the dealer several times after a long trip (200-300KM) and say please check the code before it dissapears. "No, the mechanic is at lunch" etc excuses. My brother has been running dealerships and his own workshop for 30 years, no not a VW shop, but has a few in every week - and has seen enough DMF failures go through. I know what a diesel rattle is - born on a farm and owned half-a-doz now. These T5 have always made the metalic clacka-clacka at idle. No shudder, though no hills to reverse up. What is the downside to a failure? Damaged bellhousing?!
Possibly.
I just drove mine carefully (manual) until I was having real trouble changing gears, then booked it in.
(300,000kms..........been noisy since about 220,000)
Flywheel and clutch etc was about $1700.
Labour about the same.
You get a 3 year warranty though!

When you say no hills to reverse up have you tried because its sure fire method of checking , if it does let go they apparently can blow the side out of the gearbox in worse case scenario .
