I can only agree 100% with this, except I'd describe it not so much as a slipping clutch, it's more like the whole darned engine/drive train system has nodded off and has to wake up before it finally decides to take off. When that finally does happen, it's refreshingly accelerative - and damnwell has to be, as by then the on/incoming traffic is standing on the brakes to avoid a t-bone accident. I've had to allow for much bigger gaps in traffic streams than I ever did with other cars I've owned.
In all other respects, it's a ball - flick it up/down, use it for engine braking while towing or whenever ... it's a real hoot; but not from a standing start!

Well I'm at the point now where I have developed such an intense dislike of the DSG ...... that I'm willing to sell a 15month old MV (with low kms) and buy a MANUAL 4-5 year old Multivan.

I'd love a new TSI Multivan, but can't face the prospect of another DSG gearbox ..... EVER ....

To top it off you can't even buy a manual 4motion Crew Van 132kw from the factory.

the dsg was not built for high torque engines and is prone to breaking down, this is the reasons why vw won't sell 4 motion with dsg, though I believe this year Amarok will come with a 8 speed auto as a option, and I would assume other 132 kw modela would have this option as well. I read this Some were and all so a dealer told me when I was ordering my 4motion last year.

I think that 4Motion comes only with DSG in T5.

Gotta say....I love my DSG. I did hate it at first....until the software upgrade was done.
If any of you DSG owners are in Melbourne, you are welcome to have a drive of mine to compare with your van if you like.

John, what was the issue sorted out by the software upgrade - was it initial lag on acceleration from a standing start?
That's the only gripe I have with the 7 speed DSG box on my T5... (which, as I have indicated, is 4 Motion optioned.)

Sorry to go over old territory but it was the article in the paper which is at the start of the thread relates to the DSG not being suitable for off road work VW admitted the fact . I suppose its a case of user beware as it seems that the DSG will give trouble in "Off Road "situations eventually . I would aggree with some a manual would be the safer option . MY T5 work van is a humble 2.0 litre petrol manual and I have to say at now nearly 180,000 kays it is still in one piece . The clutch is on its last legs as when I take off up the hill in front of home she gets a little slippery as the clutch engages at the last release point I can change gears almost with a simple tap on the clutch pedal with my toe !!!! But compared to our family T5 its been a hell of a lot more reliable and only cost half the price almost , just a summary family van tranny playing up fiercely from 60,000 to now 128,000 . water pump failed 50,000 sliding door nearly fell of rollers disintegrated 60,000 , intercooler hose problem same time , diesel fuel cooler holed [now discarded]. My work van water pump was only done with timing belt at 110,000 kays it was still intact !! other than brake pads which is normal its been pretty bullet proof {even if its a bit underpowered } and I might add the sliding door on work van is opened and closed dozens of times a day so why did a door with limited use on the other van fail ?? I would give serious thought to one of the new upcoming turbo 2.0 litres petrol models only with manual though !!

Yes, it was the lag, particularly if you are coasting into a roundabout, and you see a break in the traffic with room for you to dart through. You put your foot down, and nothing happens....as a car is coming towards you....then all of a sudden BANG....It goes.
The software upgrade fixed this on my van. It also shortens the hill hold time when taking off.
The only time it still does this, is when the motor is stone cold in the morning, and I go around the first corner from my house. I put this down to a cold engine/transmission etc.
