From what I have been told by law car makers are not obliged to keep stock of parts ten years after the last model of a series is sold , and the way things are going it will get worse as we draw closer to cars being disposable rather than repairing them .
    It’s 8 years in Australia.
In 2003 I couldn’t get the fuel pump for 1995 Holden Calibra.

Not keeping a supply of commonly used parts in stock seems to be the current thing.
When we had our gearbox replaced, exactly the same thing told to ourselves and another van in the dealers workshop awaiting a new 7spd dsg, “sorry none in Australia wait 3 weeks”. Now hang on same gearbox in all vans and Tiguans sold at that time.
Now their trying to say no bumpers to a multivan/transporter that they sell a lot of ??
Very sad business practice of saving money on having no inventory and not paying for the warehouse space to store it, at the customers expense.
They had to replace a gearbox in my old T4 under warranty and there were none in Australia.
Six weeks, I was told (they always seem to say that)
So I demanded a loaner..........got one.......and magically, was back on the road two weeks later!
(must have stumped up for air freight)

But the Calibra was built in Europe so limited numbers sold here would have resricted too many parts being imported .

My point is that our local manufacturers had to keep the spare parts only for 8years after last car was made.

And when they do miraculously have the part don’t they know how to charge. Luckily a family friend runs a Porsche workshop and was able to source my part from Pierburg Germany who supplies it to VW, and at less than half the VW price as it doesn’t have a VW 10cent sticker on it. Sick of being ripped of by businesses in Australia

I agree I do repair work on sunroofs in cars and I often do an internet search for parts from the US . Just recently I quoted a broken sunroof glass for a customers car .Local dealer price $1895AU US price $440 , now how is that a level playing field our federal government keep telling us they need to get so they could justify sticking GST on online purchases etc .
