I discovered a new feature today, If you unlock the van and don't open the door after about 20 seconds or so (when the interior lights go off) the van automatically locks itself.

    Yep.
I had a scare the other day at the rubbish tip. My wife told me our T5 van had locked its self with the keys in the ignition.
Luckily I had my window down, other wise I would have been stuffed and closed our tip as the vehicle locked itself at the only dump point.
Wasn't there a plastic key that you could keep in your wallet for the T5?
    Best wishes.

We got the plastic key with our Touareg, it's great when you go to beach.
I'm sure there must be one for T5 too.

How did you unlock the car and get out without opening any doors for it to self-relock because this is the only way it should happen unless there is a fault IIRC? It shouldn't have done so otherwise.

The key was in the ignition while I was out of the van with ignition off. It then locked itself after a set time.
I had the drivers window down while I was reverse parking the trailer or I would have been locked out.
It's a feature I'm aware of, but unsure if it only occurs with the key in the ignition, as it doesn't seem to when it's out (i.e, parked in my garage).
I'll look into it further, including the instruction book.

Strange one. I've sat in my van, locked it with the remote and then unlocked it, waited a bit and then had the van auto-relock. As soon as a door is opened after unlocking using the remotes it shouldn't ever try and relock itself.

I think that's the key to it (no pun intended)... if the vehicle is unlocked from the remote and none of the doors or boot are opened, then it relocks automatically as a safety precaution -eg in case you unlocked the car accidentally pushing the key from within your pocket etc etc.
Didn't think you could use the buttons on the remote with the key in the ignition though? I've had the interior lights turn themselves off while working on the car after some time delay (and I had turned the lights to On it wasn't with the door sensor) so perhaps the doors will lock again even if the key is still inserted....

    Hmm, electronics.

Keep a spare key hidden under neath somewhere, just in case.
