Ah ha! I discovered the buzzing indicator just this week on my '98. Thought 'headlights' and flicked them on and off a few times, then walked round the front and saw the left park light on. Thought something had shorted out. Even thumped the dash a couple of times (old school repair style). Gave up, went and did my errand then discovered the indicator on after I got back and started the motor. It was a real WTF moment.

Thanks all for clearing that one up

    Parkers

Yes, VW's have had this feature 'forever'. Certainly my 1990 & 1986 Transporters had it, and, I think my 1975 Golf as well. I can't be sure about that last one though, because it was 1975 when I owned it. Pretty sure the '63 splitty I had in the mid 80's (and sold for $500) didn't though.

    Indicator Chime

Wish I'd have seen this post a few months ago. I took my 07 Van in under warranty due to the bloody chime which I couldn't identify. I drove out of there quite embarrassed!

I used to own a type 3, 1964 1500S[notchback] that was fully imported that had this feature without the chimes of course.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Coming into winter you may find another unknown feature, the ice alert, there is a chime and a little snowflake appears in the MFD when temp gets down to ~3 degrees. That one surprised me going down to Victoria. It seems to be a louder ping than the other warnings or perhaps just as your not expecting it whilst driving through winding mountain roads and concentrating on the road rather than the MFD. Doesn't happen often in Queensland.

I've discovered a completely useless feature in my T5. My speedo works whilst reversing. Hmm maybe it's busted!
I can check my speed while I back out of my driveway. How usefull

I have an unexpected feature on my van, the "4 motion" writing on the gearstick changed from red to invisible after 10000k's.

Same with mine. And here's another one, when I drive out of a car wash I used to ride the brake pedal a little to dry the discs of any water, in the T5 when you apply the brake while still having your foot on the throttle it cuts power completely....
