I took the caravelle back to the garage to get some work finished and asked the question about a high pitch noise since timing belt change. I had noticed the serpentine belt had jumped 2 grooves so they looked at that. Turns out the wrong AC compressor had been fitted before i got the van and it was out of alignment with other pulleys.
He refitted the belt and booked to get it sorted Friday. Said belt has now frayed some off down the edge of it and sounds like s**t but is still on with 4 of 6 grooves.
What I need to know is can I drive it carefully to the garage 15 mins away on Friday. If it actually snaps, what am I going to lose.
i know the a/c, I'll turn it off before hand, power steering and alternator. Will I lose water pump or is that timing belt controlled, thats my biggest worry.

In short distance you may get away with that, but otherwise I wouldn't be driving on the damaged s/belt, if the belt breaks off it could get tangled in the other pulleys, it could also get under the timing belt cover and dislodge the timing belt. What engine is that? I guess it would be 4 cylinder in your T5?

Well, if it's a timing belt {driving the camshaft(s)}, then if that stops and the engine keeps rotating, you will end up with valves hitting pistons. The result is a fairly major expense.Originally Posted by Pominoz13
If it's only driving ancillaries, then you will end up stranded as long as the flailing belt doesn't take out anything else.

We made the steady journey with all ancillaries off and it was fine so I ws lucky. John from volks home has sorted it all now and did it for a really fair price.
