    Changing engine oil question

    Hello all,

I've got a VW T5 2.5L tdi 2009 that I service myself according to the service schedule. I've noticed that whenever I do an oil + oil filter change the oil gets fairly black as soon as I pour in the new oil and check for the oil level on the dip stick. Is this normal for a diesel engine?

Basically, what I do when I change the engine oil I will:

1, Take van around the block to heat up the oil a bit.
2, Drain all oil out until oil drips extremely slowly.
    3, Remove oil filter
4, Replug sump and poor in 500-1L of clean new oil
5, Remove sump and flush completely again
6, Fit new oil filter and poor in the new oil

I don't have a vacuum tool to extract the oil in the oil filter housing, is this where all the dirty oil is getting caught up?
Or have I missed something? Would it be safe to crank the engine briefly between step 4-5 to get the oil moving a bit?

    Oil used: Mobil1 ESP 5W30

    Any tips would be great!

    No.

I have not noticed the oil going black, straight from pour-in.
It goes black very soon after a few runs.It is the nature of the diesel

    Thanks mate,

I didn't think it would be safe to crank the engine with barely any oil, but it seemed odd that the oil would turn fairly black as soon as I pour it in. Sounds like it's normal for diesel engines!

no, don't crank it over with only 1L of flush oil in it.

I've never worried about flush oil but if you must then go & buy the cheapest oil you can (like the $10/5L stuff in Franklins) & put the proper amount in & run the engine at a fast idle (~1000rpm) for 15 minutes. Also, move step 3 and put it after step 5 (no point making a new filter filthy)

Try changing engine oil and oil filter every 7,500km.
