can i go to 16 inch wheels from 17 inch wheels

    hi everyone,

i've searched as much as I can but I can't quite find the specific answer I'm after, or at least a definitive answer that puts my mind at ease. My van is a 2005 128kw LWB and it currently has 17inch steels rims. I'm looking at changing the wheels. A mate has 16 inch wheels on his van (2006 128kw lwb) and lots of vans that i see also have 16 inch wheels.
My tyre placard doesn't have any reference to 16 inch wheels.
I would like to know if I can fit 16 inch rims to my van without any issue as long as I keep the rolling diameter load rating etc within the right variables?

    any assistance greatly appreciated

    thank you

    micheddie.

You might have trouble fitting over the brake rotors Also if Diameter is smaller engine will rev higher for same speed therefore use more fuel and speedo will be more incorrect(faster) than normal

Apart from others having 16's what logical reason do you have to want to change

He's going to maintain the same rolling diameter so no problem there
(I assume you are also looking for same width and offset)

Brake clearance, wheel and tyre load ratings are the things to watch
If you can't find anybody that has done this to your model you'll need to trial fit a rim
Need at least 3mm clearance to the brake caliper

Transporter models with 333 mm diameter front brake discs cannot be fitted with 16" wheels.

I just happened to see some vw alloys on gumtree thats all. I thought they may fit on my van. I only have steel rims at the moment and to be honest i don't like the look that much.

I wish I could remain anonymous on this one as the guys will jump all over me . I have my work van now fitted with 17,s up from 16,s there was a huge pool of available wheels on Ebay etc as the Holden Commodore 2000- 2005-6 has the correct stud pattern as for off set not so sure but mine have been on the van for over 160.000 kays now and no problems . I will admit mine came off a Holden Crewman V8 with one tonne load so weight wise I believe there is no problem , and certainly the police who have pulled me over several times for RBT and rego check etc did not make any issue about it either and they still have the Holden insignia in the center caps which causes some funny looks and some dumb questions about the vans heritage . As yours is a long wheel base that may be a different load rating issue to over come .

Please note insurance issues could arise if an accident could be proved to be caused by the fitment of the wrong wheels , I accepted my own risk fitting these wheels .

A friend of mine has an 05 T5 Tdi Double Cab tray back Lwb bought on 17" steel wheels but soon wrecked the tyres carrying full weight on poor roads - so switched to 16' steels 7 some xtra tough tyres - as far as I know had no problems, the larger Dia. disks came on later models, borrow a wheel to try a 'find out fit' on the front first, if you can't find another T5 owner perhaps your (friendly) V W agency might help,

When I first got the 17,s from the Crewman they still had the original lo profile tyres but after a few months I got sick of the "S*&^T" being pounded out of me and put normal size and bliss returned .
