what quality brake pads are you using on the rear ???? has the rear rotors been machined ? as Brad said...cool off and pad clamping force is reduced BUT some pads are worse than others... lucky no one was injured

I buy my discs and pads from GSL I think the last ones were DBA but not sure and yes had the rotors machined a couple of months ago but I think it was only the front ones as they had developed a small shudder under braking the rears were fine .

At least no one was hurt. Your story reminded me about a time where I was parked in a farm driveway, van empty and trailer still carrying about 300kg. I u-turned at bottom of hill to drive up and unload so nose is facing uphill. Went into back of van from rear doors, and I have a cargo barrier behind 2nd row seats and suddenly could hear dragging of rear wheels as van slid back downhill. To say I browned myself would be an understatement. Jumped out around trailer draw bar, managed to get in and hit the brake pedal.

Yes the only thing that hurt here is I now have to be without the van for a week or whatever , luckily we still have the wifes older T5 at home so I will just strip out the work van and use the other van for work . The one upside will be that when it comes back I will use the opportunity to give the inside a makeover , it is in dire need of a freshen up anyway .[ That is after I finish off the LWB van I am currently working on ] My good mate who does my sign writing was going to replace the photos on the window areas so now he can do almost a complete new job .

I think parking in 2nd is where it went pear shaped. Park in firts if facing up hill; reverse if facing down. Turn the front wheels so that if it starts to roll the tyres hit the kerb before you gain too much momentum

Yes I am starting to see how the van rolled away discs cooling etc , but as I said I have parked that way hundreds and hundreds of times before so this time is an odd one . I don't think I will ever get a clear answer , maybe old age and I just did not apply the hand brake as hard as I could have who knows its past history now and I will just get over it . Thanks everyone for the words of support and the helpful hints , I can say for sure it will never happen again !! [fingers crossed ]

All the holes in the cheese lined up.

At this point you either keep doing what you were doing & hope or adjust some habits / processes & not think about it again.

Well good news the insurance company is going to repair the van , looks like it will be like a new one again as they are also repairing some minor dings on the passengers side that were caused by a hidden gate post six months ago . So all new paint work from drivers door all the way around the back to the passengers front door plus all new business sign writing . Once I get it back it will be time for MY OWN van to get a makeover for a change , I had to gut it out to allow the panel beater access to the side walls etc , so when it comes back I will do an interior make over with new stuff and then refit the shelves and storage areas.
