Thanks for taking the time to explain that. For me I think the ODBII will be enough for now. I just want to get some idea of what a problem might be before I get the mechanic involved. My current/previous mechanic treated me as a mushroom and just wouldn't tell me what the code number was. At this stage it's unlikely I'll attempt any repairs myself (my history with fixing cars is not an illustrious one . I'm hoping for happier times with my soon to be new VW specialist mechanic anyway.

That's annoying for sure
I would have recommended ODBLink - rock solid device with fast communications (you can actually do live monitoring/tuning)
Trouble is they are getting pricey now - more expensive than low end Autel
Perhaps this one is worth a try

OK I will give that a try thankyou.

The same OBD11Scanner device came with our Chinese replacement DVD GPS head unit , you plug it in and go to the app on the head unit {Android 5.1} and you can see the readouts etc without a laptop or other mobile device . Autel MD802 All Systems is what I have at the moment.
It's the best value for money one they have. It's not bi-directional, nor does it have an oscilloscope function, but it does the job. Was around $400 from memory, and came with a while heap of brand-specific adaptor plugs.
It'll scan and clear codes from all modules, and can reset service lights, and even change the intervals on VWs.

I have one of these. It's okay for the price. Scott
V-Checker V202 - KWP2000 + KWP1281 + CANBUS
Looks like the latest version. Picks up faut codes and do coding, active monitoring, coding etc although instructions a little limited.

I had completely forgotten about my posts and the advice here. Based on the info I can still see, would this still be my best option now for reading and clearing codes for a 2010 T5.2?

Has anyone tried one of these VW-specific scanners from souped.com.au?
They look suspiciously cheap for AU$80, but you have to select your make/model, so maybe they can make money because your scanner only works for a single vehicle?
It's almost worth a crack at that price... Unless anyone has tried one and had them not work
