Guys I was told 10000 km ago on my last service my pads would not make the next service and need to be replaced, my light has just come on and I have 5000 till next service.
Do you think I can make it till the service? As money is a issue atm.
Advice appreciated.

Thanks The One I am aware of this, but I am sure they don't expect you to pull into the nearest service centre and have them replaced as soon as the light comes on. My question is more about the built in buffer they would have and on people's experience is it a suffiant ammount, like am I talking days or weeks. I drive about 500 to 750 km per week.

After the light comes on the pad might be about 2-2.5mm thickness which should perhaps last you 2000-5000kms, hard to give you a definite answer over the internet though matey...Originally Posted by REVHE4D

Look at the brake disc and see if there's a lip at the outer edge of the disc. Usually the pads wear out the discs, leaving a lip (ridge) at the top. The lip sets the brake pad wear indicator on, and later can even come in the contact with the brake pad causing the grinding noise. Though the area of the disc that comes in contact with the pad is only that lip. I've done 20,000km after my brake pads warning light came on, the pads when replaced still had more than 2mm of frition material remaining.

I was told 15000kms ago by an independent VW specialist in Cairns that my brakes needed new pads at the next service (and I trust them) yet when serviced at Pickering's VW Townsville (the dealership), there was no mention of brake pads needing replacement. I think their wear report had a fair bit left on the pads.
Who do you trust?
That being said, if the change light came on, I'd get them done as soon as I could afford it.

Interesting, when I took my car in for a check-up I was told I had 2mm left on the rear brakes, which should give me ~5000Km, and nearly 700Km later still no light. Could the R32 stock brakes be different? They're OEM, nothing fancy (yet)

Adding to this rather than starting a new thread.
My brake warning light came on a week or so ago. 2011 MV (Ed 25), around 35K kms on the clock; mainly local/urban short-trip driving.
Took it up to my local VW dealer - they said there was 2mm friction material left on the front brakes, and that the discs had lipped. Was told the front had about "1,000 kms" left in them.
The quote for replacing the front pads, front discs (they said they don't machine?) and labour was $1K. Rear pads had a little more left to the pads - quote to replace rear pads only and labour was around $250.
I'm surprised at both the amount of the quote, and the need to replace the discs. Appreciate any thoughts on either.
Not averse to going to an independent for second opinion and/or to get it done, if anyone has a recommendation. Sydney - lower north shore.
