    Bloody type 4's !!!!

I have a 2.5 litre type 4 petrol transporter with oil in coolant resevoir.
Problem appears to be heat exchanger ? Temp gauge was normal but warning light came on. I shut down engine immediately. What is the best way to remove the sludge from cooling system ?
There is no coolant on dipstick but very little oil.
Am i on the right track ?

You might be on the right track.

Go to your VW dealer and buy a bottle of cooling system cleaner. I think it's a 4L bottle, and the stuff looks a lot like pink coolant. It's the same stuff they use when Transporter and Touareg engines have the same problem.

Pour half the bottle into the system, with the rest water, and get it up to operating temperature and let it run for a while. Drain it, and repeat the process.

You may need to replace the expansion bottle, as the oil can contaminate the level sensor, meaning the low coolant light wont go out, no matter how full or clean the bottle is.

Thanks, My mechanic came over this morning and we bypassed oil cooler so we could flush it out properly. It started straight away, and idle fine, until ..........? Well, the rest of the story is not good. It appears we have a cracked head ? we did first flush and it didnt want to restart so we let it cool a bit more and it eventually did but we have 2 dead cylinders...
So if anyone has a spare engine, contact me.
