OUCH re the crease! It's an awful feeling.
I didn't take out the extra warranty though probably should have. Since my vehicle ran out of warranty I had to replace a windscreen wiper motor. (The O-ring seal had clearly been cut on assembly and water could get in, but not out. There was a huge amount of rust and corrosion in the housing but the Service folk wouldn't cover it - 3 m after the warranty ran out. Tonight I am battling trying to get the Turbo pipework back to working - as I have to replace the moo valve. Neither of these jobs would have justified $4000 though.
I posted on a UK site the issues I had under warranty:
Two "slam valves" failed, (serially) and were replaced under warranty. (These let air out of the vehicle when doors are shut but aren't supposed to let dust in. Mine were sucking huge quantities of dust into the cab.)
A front side light mysteriously filled with water and was replaced under warrantee.
TWO DSG gearboxes failed and were replaced under warranty, TWO.
The ?bearing plates above the front shock-absorbers failed and were replaced under warranty.
A bolt holding a rear brake caliper fell out, unbeknown to me. A second bolt then sheared and left me stranded in a most remote area. Tow truck and repairs were covered under warranty/VW roadside assistance. Caliper, disk etc was replaced. (Mind you, the tow truck was 17 hours later than promised and we were left in a most exposed situation, potentially quite dangerous, overnight.)
The left front door hinge broke and was replaced under warranty.
The windscreen wiper motor failed after 3 years and 3 months but the service agent wouldn't cover the issue. I bought and replaced a new one. On careful inspection it was clear that the sealing O-ring in the motor was cut as it was assembled and the break just happened to be in a position where it could allow water in but not allow it to drain. It was clear there had been water lying in the housing for a LONG time and rusting/corroding the innards. Electronics were fried.
The N75 turbo boost valve started mooing (3 yrs 10 months after purchase) but the service agent wouldn't consider it as a goodwill issue and I now have the pipes to rectify the problem.
FWIW,
Dave
