Auto trans lock up problems ?

Any one having problems with the auto shuddering at about 85/90Kph as it changes from 4th gear to auto converter clutch lock up .
I tow trailers & vans a little but only get about 10K out of the trans fluid & filters useing Castrol this time when Valvoline went crappy at about the same mileage & I traced the shudder to the trany & not road surfaces as I first thought .
If I slip it into 3Rd & wind it up to 4K rpm them back into D avoids the problem after about 400Klm of driving on a cool day @ an average of 73Kph acording to ScanGague data .
Oil aint cheep but a change & filter again looks like being un avoidable .
If I could only drain the converter to may help as it holds lots of old oil that mucks up the new stuff real quick .
I will go with the Castrol green gunk again as I have a pressure pot set up with it in to charge the system & can watch the fluid as it moves in & out of the pan so you can get the level spot on with the engine running .
    Just wondering thats all .

Auto shuddering at about 85/90Kph as it changes from 4th gear to auto converter clutch lock up, is a sure sign that the auto is not in a good state, and is generally related to the converter clutch.

I was always told that these trannys should only be filled with the VW oem oil.

    Good luck.

Going by your older posts you have a T4. As Silver says you should only use VW oil or the same spec. The problem comes from only being able to drain half of the oil as you have found. Mixing oils is a no-no.

I have a 2003 T4 transporter with shudder at about 60 to 70kph. my mechanic has changed the auto oil and that improved a problem only a little bit. The oil was very dirty.

So should I have the transmission rebuilt or is it cheaper in the long term to bite the bullet and replace it. I do want to tow a 18ft boat but not far to the ramp.

If rebuilding is worthwhile so can someone recommend someone in brisbane with experience in these boxes?

The experts on these transmissions are in Melbourne. Dealers remove them & freight to these people, probably cost around $6000 all up. Try a search on this forum, I remember this topic being discussed before.
