    Alternator

Any one changed one or had issues? My battery light is on and the manual says 'alternator'. I'm checking fuses and am going to see if I can see the coupling to see what it looks like. The coupling hasn't been changed yet. Hopefully it's something simple.
My mechanic hasn't done one yet and reckons my van is too young(165k) to have a crook alternator.

    Hmm. What next?

So, found the alternator and accompanying couplings. Can turn coupling to alternator by end of fingers and alternator turns. When the motor runs the alternator don't. What are the logical issues here. Stripped coupling outer or stripped shaft. Looks like the alt will be ok.
Next question. Will Christmas be cancelled to get her fixed?

A lot of the cost will be in a labour time. Try contact gtimk5 he will know approx. cost and can point you to your closest independent VW specialist.

VW suggests about 2.5 hours to do the job. while you're at it, do the one for the air conditioning compressor too, as it's in the way.

The couplings are about $150pr from memory.

Spoke to local dealer. ~$700 to do the job including coupling, at about 4-5hrs. Their price for one coupling is $147. Sounds...um...ok. But what makes the coupling strip? What else would I be up for that will push the price up? I don't think I'll do the a/c one till needed. It's fairly easy to get at.
Umai Naa!!. Is your price $150 for two sets, aftermarket or VW price? And 2.5hrs would be cheaper as well. Where is The Sticks? I might have to come for a visit.

$700 to be done by vw is a good price the gates couplings usually fail due to the pulleys locking up. the 1 way pulleys lock up and kick back on shut down of the engine stripping the gates coupling would be checking your 1 way clutch pulleys on your alternator and power steering pump/a/c compressor the alternator also should come out with the bracket mounting all as one piece as its all aligned together and misaligned alternators will destroy new couplings and you've got peace of mind of 2 years warranty if it fails

Steve, yeah found the Brickyard info. I downloaded the pics to show VW what parts I was talking about. That one with the open front end is scary! My old T4's it was easy to lift and drag the radiator forward.
Bushnut. Two year warranty sounds like a good idea.
