    Air con problems 2005 Multivan

Hi there, just wondering if anyone can help with a problem with my air con that's now not working...?

A few weeks ago, we noticed that when the air con was running, the fan noise was normal but when we turned the air con off or down, the fan would be heaps noisier and rattly. Today the air con is not working at all but the fan still does. The rattling has also stopped.

I've looked at the fuses and they all look good. Any other tips or tricks please?

It's either elastic coupling or A/C pump itself. Independent VW workshop (or VW dealer) should be able to help you with that.

What engine and how many km have you done?

(it's always a good idea if someone asks for help or advice to quote what engine, how many km's car traveled and other details that may be useful)

Quite possibly a drive coupling on the compressor. As for the fan noise, it may have ingested something.

Mine went at 70,000km, stripped the spline on the input shaft to the aircon compressor, the gates couping was perfect but the ratchet hub was siezed. Unike most compressors that kick in with an electric clutch whenever needed, the VW one runs all the time and the output is regulated by valves on the output side. Consequently, they would be likely to wear out much sooner as they run 100% of the time.

New hub and new compressor set me back $AU2000 and left me wondering when it will fail again. And not using the aircon won't help either, you feel like you better use it all the time to get your moneys worth before the next failure.

Thanks for your replies. It has always been serviced at a VW dealer and the coupling should have been changed at the 150,000km mark. There's nothing to say on the paperwork to say that it was though. The last post makes me very nervous about taking it in to be checked. $2000 geez!!!

Mine went the week before Christmas at 110000km. It was the ratchet hub and nothing else was needed despite me telling them what someone on the forum said about needing to replace more parts as a minimum. It has been fine for the last 5000km since then. It didn't cost that much to fix (much less than $1000 anyway) at the VW dealer in Perth.

Soooo. Booked in for a service - all good. Asked about the air con and mechanic said it was the drive coupling for the compressor (good pick Umai Naa!!) so that's a phew I think. However, as it was supposed to be changed at the 150,000km service (which was done at a VW dealership), where do we stand as there is no record of it actually being done? Anyone got any tips please?

I find it hard to believe that it went after only 10,000kms. Just to add, we bought 2nd hand and it was previously serviced at a different VW dealership than the one we have taken it to...
