    Air Con on a 1997 Transporter T4

    Hi Guy,

My first thread. I am not sure how the air con works in my transporter T4. I only have 3 rotary switches. from left to right-1 blower rotary switch next is the Temperature switch and the next switch that you have the air coming out at you feet or up on the dash and out the side places. I just bought a new Heater Control unit the hole thing as the heater had been broken and hot air all the time. Cannot buy the cable so I'll make some thing up so I can shut the hot water off. But I don't know how to get the Air con working. Also the Owners Manual is for a newer transporter I think as the Heater Panel has 2 small rotary swatches just below them is the 3 big rotary switches. I have noticed that a button on the dash if I push it in it lights up and when I turn blower switch off the light goes out. Is that the Air Conditioning button you push in when you want the air on?????

Many thank guys for you help here.

You probably have one like used to be on one of our T4's , it was some sort of VW joke . Nothing on the switch indicated air con all ours had was a cross maybe a religious action was needed . But as Umai says the air only works with the switch on as well .The heater cable on the T4 was always a bugger the steel control cable was inside a wire spring like tube for flex , over time it would seize up . After winter was over I used to manually close the valve under the bonnet to stop the hot water getting to the heater core inside the cab .

Yes, that button will engage the clutch on the aircon compressor.

The air cond. on these models was not factory fitted but fitted in OZ by the importers. It was probably much cheaper to have the Nippon Denso kit fitted. The pipework did not fit perfectly from the kit & I check regularly every time I open the bonnet that the pipes are not rubbing. The electrical work was not done correctly as well, so that every time the fan is switched on for instance in winter to circulate heat through the matrix, the radiator fan comes on.

These control panels are fitted to models with a rear floor heater as well as the in dash heater.
