    6 speed auto behaviour

Hi, ive only just bought a 05 T5 transporter and was wondering if the way my auto behaves is normal as i have never had a transmission like this.

This only happens sometimes when i accelerate gently, the gear change between 2nd and 3rd has a slip like rev during the change. it only happens here and there so im not sure if its normal or not.

How does everyone find the 6 speed?

    Cheers

How many Km's has it done? Mine does something a little funky when going slow up a steep hill when changing between 2nd-3rd gear, it tends to jump back and forth.

I usually just pull it back into Sport and it holds second to the top of the hill. This hill is near my super market and is the only place it does it. I think its more a matter of speed/load/and turbo lag.

My 06 van I purchased couple of months ago does similar, Moto.
    It's done 133,000 ks
Changed the oil in the auto, that made the shifting a bit more definite.
And like Ivo, if I get into twisty hilly stuff, stick it in S
Has been on my mind the box might not be 100%, but I've got a back up plan if it does bite the dust, so I'm not really worried about it.

    Hi Motoxer,

My 08 Multi has a similar issue with flaring on 2nd to 3rd it has been like this since new and i have had it back to dealer. As per most issues there- no problem found.

I will be interested in what others have to say.

I had my box replaced under warranty back at about 65K km (iirc) because of flaring between gear changes. In my case it felt like the box went into neutral, with a big rise in revs and lack of forward momentum before the next gear engaged. Ironically it occurred after I asked for an oil change which wasn't required as per manual. The transmission is adaptive and adjusts to your driving and so can be reset as descibed by Transporter's great info in the stickie above: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f136/how-do-32769.html This actually smoothed out my box for a short time until the dealer decided to replace it.

    Resetting Transmission Control Module (TCM)

    1. Ignition ON and Engine OFF
    2. Press the accelerator to the floor till it clicks
    3. Hold the pedal for 15 seconds
    4. Release pedal gently
    5. Turn Key to OFF
    6. Start engine and drive normally

The TCM will now re-adapt to your driving style.

I've noticed mine sometimes gets a little indecisive about gears on the 2-3 and 3-4 change,on light load(eg slight uphill).Revs go up while it decides, then goes back in gear type of thing. Maybe done it only 2 or 3 times since I got it at 55K km.Now at 110K km

BTW,did partial oil change at 75K km (you will only drain about half the gearbox oil on a service).

Rang a few auto shops for qoutes ranging from $250-350. But they were not real confident in what they doing etc.

Rang VW dealer he went into thoroughly, $56/lt for oil in 1lt bottles but he said easy to get 3-4lts out but to get any more need to run the engine and pump it out. But still will not get it all out but maybe 6lts. No filters, no band adjustments as its all electronic. Considering the nature of the box its probably worth going with the dealer as they seem to know what they were talking about. He also said they had 2 in the shop with around 180k on the clock and they had gear box issues

I could probably do the semi change my self and just do it every year. 3-4lts every year (approx 30k) may be ok.

    Thoughts?

Im also looking to tow a jet ski over summer, and wondering if the gearbox has a tranny cooler come standard or if i should get one. i know most tranny problems are caused by the trans getting too hot.

has anyone had a trans cooler installed? if so prices and any complications?

    Cheers

    Hi Guys
Got a similar problem going with my T5 auto, mine does it in 3-4, only when warmed up and only when i drive it gently. If i put the foot down a bit more and make it change @ 2700-3000...... good as gold.
Been doing soem homework on the subject and it appears to be worn valve body bits.
This is no doubt due to the "filled for life" fluid.
I have done the drain/fill/drain thing and it hasnt got any better or worse and ive done another 10k.
i just bought a new filter and if you have a look at one, its isnt a filter- just a mesh strainer so all those bits of metal and friction floating about will wear out the valve spools.....no question.
I am pretty dirty on the dealer as on two occations i asked the service advisors about changing the fluid...........nah, its fine they said.
Change the fluid......do it yourself its not hard, but do it. Now !!!
