4Motion on Fraser Island?

Hi, I have had a read of the "How capable 4 motion" thread.
Just further to that has anybody specifically taken or had experience with a 4motion on Fraser Island?
Having never been there not clear on the driving conditions in relation to the sand. If its hard packed or really soft.
I have your stock standard 07 4motion, had it on the beach a few times, but majority has been firm sand that really a 2wd could handle. Just wondering if I could take my van to Fraser or am I asking for trouble,

If it's good for the Dakar, you shouldn't have a problem at the Fraser Island, if you prepare well yourself and the van (right tyres and bit more ground clearance). But, I would never go alone.

Avoid soft sand... no lock diff could be a disadvantage.

Stay away from wet spots at low tide Quick Sand loves to eat cars . If you look on this Facebook site there are plenty of scary results of failed crossings etc https://www.facebook.com/4WDFU I especially love the one taken on Moreton Island last June .

Isn't the Fraser Island mostly the soft sands as the island is just sand not the rock?

Yes it is and lots of reasonably capable vehicles get stuck on the tracks that get churned up by incompetent drivers and the big tourist buses that travel around all day every day.
For tourist buses read adapted 4wd trucks with big balloon tyres.
Clearance is the biggest attribute on Fraser in the soft sand tracks

I've been to Fraser and wouldn't recommend it in anything that wasn't a proper 4x4. Getting off the boat is probably the worst bit, and further inland some of the sand is soft and deep.

I'm a regular to Fraser Is and have been for many years.... I would tend to agree that it is really only for dedicated off road vehicles, especially the inland tracks and the transition from beach across the dune area. 95% is easy enough for a 2wd to handle, its the 5% that gets people in trouble.

If you want to test it out, try shooting up to North Shore Noosa for a day trip, or go to Rainbow beach and run up to Inskip Point via the beach. It is all the same coastline and there is plenty of assistance if things get sticky.

Have your tyres below 15psi and take recovery tracks and a snatchum strap...staple gear for sand.

max trax and a snatch strap are a necessity. Hope you have some decent tyres too, something with a strong sidewall that will be able to withstand Low tyre pressures. (unless you're good at reseating beads)

Have a look on a forum like 4wdaction or etc, and you'll find out alot more info about travel times, areas to avoid, recovery techniques etc.
