i have a rear unit fitted in a LWB X NSW Ambulance and yes it does help with the overall comfort of the passengers in the rear
Just a quick question for those that might know, if I order the 2nd (rear) a/c heater unit for a T6 Transporter i know it is positioned in the rear RHS between wheel arch and rear door. My question is regarding air output..is it just blown out and forward from the vents on the side of the unit's trim? Being a Transpoerter vs a Multivan/Caravelle the Transporter doesn't come with roof mounted outlets so I'm wondering if I'm wasting my money ordering one if I also install a cargo barrier with clear curtain behind a second row of seats which obviously would block the airflow from the rear unit?

Would you believe after visiting 3 dealerships in the last 3 weeks I finally came across a salesman that described exactly what such an install in a Transporter looks like (vs a Caravelle/Multivan/Crewvan)...to those wondering, an intergrated duct runs up the rhs rear corner from the unit sitting behind the rhs wheel arch and it runs forward along the rhs roof line feeding 6 small circular vents in a lwb van and 3 vents in a swb van. The rhs rear cargo area (below window line) from the c-pillar to tailgate is also covered in a full plastic trim panel which also encloses the wheel arch....and we found a photo from the Techsafe website which showed the unit in a rear shot of their seat install.
You are right I had to deal with one of these a few years back when I installed a sunroof into a T5 . Out of interest our current 2012 t5.1 has just the standard aircon upfront and my son sits in a bucket seat in the very rear corner as we also have two wheelchair seated children towards the front . he complains that it gets very cool down the rear as the cool air seems to pool towards the rear of the van . Whilst he does not get cold air actually blowing on him the temp does get very cool after a while in that area .If you have the plastic screen part way back I would imagine this would almost negate the need for rear aircon as the front air works so well it will fill the smaller space quite quickly . The other thing is that you would need to close any rear vents behind the plastic screen as that would just be wasted energy , also the further the air has to travel along the side the less effect it will have , you may find you would have to have it on high for longer to get the temp down .I would suggest that with the plastic screen in the front aircon will do the job more than adequately . VWs air cons seem much more efficient these days than in the past . My work 2005 T5 aircon needs to be on fan speed 3or 4 to cool down my van but the wifes 2012 T5.1 only needs to be on speed 2 or it gets too cool and we live in QLD !
You're right Sunny, I have a 07 T5 and to cool the second row passengers I need to run the fan at 3 or 4 during summer in Melb. Interesting about the T5 GP having much better cooloing. I save $1000 by not ordering it in a T6. I'm still deciding between a mesh cargo barrier with plastic curtain ( as i have now) or the full vapour seal type, with rear visibilty being a factor.
