True but VW sold theirs as "sealed for life" now no where in our manual did it say what is "Life " . A manufacturer should give an expectancy of how long the fluid will retain is viscocity before it starts to decay , and then why put a vital component like a filter inside and tell dealers it cannot be changed as they do not allow the dealers to open the box !! it does not make logical sense .

ZZE122R Corolla has a filled for life auto trans. Runs a Toyota-specific oil, and has an internal filter, that can be accessed by removing the pan, once the oil is drained. Failures aren't that common.

Transmission is made by Aisin, who also make the T5 auto...

    Explain that.

You missed the point an I agree that yes the sump pan can be removed but when you are not privy to other information the dealer has you at their mercy . I was told that they would never remove the sump as VW told them not to .

Hi Guys, not sure if this thread is still about engines but my 2011 4motion had exactly the same failure 2 weeks ago. The big difference is that mine had a new engine fitted 30000 km ago under a 70% goodwill from VW. That was at 115000 km and related to high oil consumption. I was happy with that outcome but to have it back in the Dealers now with another catastrophic failure is devastating given the previous total repair bill exceeded $21 k. As you can imagine there is a lot of wrangling going on and I will keep the forum informed. I am very positive who won't be paying for this debacle, ME !
Fullcirc, feel free to pm me if I can be of any help or advice. I do know that that there is a CFCA engine with only 30000km available on the net in Melbourne.
    Wish me luck people !

I wonder if the "robust kit "was fitted to your new engine at the time of replacement , plus failing at only 30000 kays after replacement is a bit hard to accept any warning that there was a problem noises etc .

So when the first engine was replaced did they fit the Robust kit or was it still standard , because it seems to me that they should have offered it at the time . When we picked up our new T5 in 2012 I was alarmed at the salesman who told me that their dealership had a "Pitstop 'system to offer customers a free refill of oil if it needed it between services . From some reports some VW models are rather thirsty when it comes to oil consumption , I can accept that sort of thing with cars 40 years ago but with modern technology oil consumption should not be an issue .

Sunny, the issue is not related only to VAG engines, many others use a lot of oil between the oil changes. Some use even lighter and more expensive engine oils, like 0w20 or 0w16.

Forgive me I am old school , I just can't get my mind around some of todays methodology . Engines that use excessive oil from brand new ! auto transmissions that are sealed and owners told they don't need to be serviced . How much other stuff is out there waiting to unleash itself upon us unsuspecting motorists .
