Could be something as simple as the brake pedal switch.
Vanners,
Today my van's auto box got locked in park and had to be towed.
VW assist was unable to get me going (didnt know anything waste of time)
He just got the car in to neutral so it could be towed.
Has anyone experienced this ???
How long was it off the road ???
thanks

Any news on the cause of the fault as I'm with gtimk5's suggestion?
I'll add a (less likely) possibility : a fault in the gear selection mechanism.
Please let us know what it was, it adds to the corporate knowledge and therefore the usefulness of this forum.

strange, it's stuck in Park, yet you're able to get it into neutral for towing? how did he do that?? is it ok now?
Strange that he hasnt been on the forum since posting the question too???
When someone asks a question I would think that they might have a look at the replies.

vanners,
it turned out to be a fault in the push button on the selector.
I got the van back frpm the stealers today.
The Mondial roadside assiatance pulled the dash and selector to allow the van to be put in neutral.
