turbo doesnt boost in 1st gear. dont know why but however that is done, perhaps it is faulty so it wont boost in second either.
Hi guys
Found a thread on here earlier re exhaust manifold cracks, particularly related to drivers side being affected and gasses drawing in through the vents. Have been given a quote of around $3000 to repair, which I found a bit on the steep side or is it?
I also have a problem where in first 2 gears, turbo boost is being lost somehow - you can actually hear it hissing quite clearly. Backing off the throttle settles it back down again and all is happy by the time I reach 3rd gear. Any ideas where I should be looking? EGR valve has been replaced, can't see any splits/cracks in any of the associated hoses, only thing I can see is a little oil weep from the joiner off the intercooler, just under the coolant bottle as it heads up to the intake plenum.
Also, whilst I'm at it, any suggestions on replacement shockies? Mine are a bit the worse for wear so trying to locate a set that are reasonable quality.
Hoping you guys may have some answers for me

If your exhaust manifold is leaking significantly, this will account for your lack of boost in hte lower gears, as that, coupled with the lower exhaust manifold pressure (lower engine loads in first and second) will mean the turbo doesnt have enough energy to spool.
You havent mentioned precisely what engine your transporter has.

I recall several reports of the manifold cracking and recall some members removing theirs and clamping them to a hard steel surface and then rewelding it with the correct welder , apparently clamping keeps the part in its correct shape and position while welding .
can you see any carbon deposits around the exh. manifold on drivers side?

seems late models have cast iron manifolds and are sturdier.

seems like the exhaust leak may be your only problem.
Fix that first IMO

OK, update. Have had 3 separate mechanics look at it, each one keeping it for a week (whilst I've taken some time out in Bali) only to come back to it unrepaired. Seems it's a "too-hard-basket" job. Last one was stupid enough to park it outside, with the key in it, overnight... Strangely enough it got stolen!! Lucky enough the thieves just wanted portable stuff out of the cab, they dumped the vehicle about 500m away from the workshop... friggin moron, not happy!!
Anyhow, for those that asked, it's the 2.5TD 178KW version and cracked around #5, you can clearly see carbon deposits on it now. I had been told that it's a cast iron manifold, but turns out they're S/S. Thought about fixing or replacing with a genuine ($1183AUD locally!!!!), but figured S/S will just end up doing the same again, so have found an after-market cast-iron one in the UK, for half the price delivered to Australia!
Does anyone know about these guys at all?

Looks like it would be a goer, but being on the wrong side of the planet I'd like some reassurance I'm not gonna waste a lot of money for no good reason!
I'm actually going to have a go at repairing a cracked one.
Should at least be the first option, before replacing it.

Another thing to note is that the top exhaust clamp (where the turbo and exhaust join together) comes loose causing the exhaust fumes smell in cabin. Mine is constantly coming loose, so will now resort putting some locktite on it to see if that works. If not a new clamp.
